Guest guest
We played flashlight tag in the dark and Statues...where you would hang on to someone's arm and drag them in a circle as fast as you could and then let go. They had to freeze in the position they landed until everyone got thrown..no one ever got their arm dislocated...lol We put playing cards on the spokes of our bike wheels. We thought we sounded sooo cool. We were always playing school...alot of kids hated the real thing but loved to play it. Red Rover was always fun espcially if you had a lot of kids. London Bridge, Tag, and A Tisket a Tasket a Green and Yellow Basket...do kids play these games any more? 4 Square Jacks So much fun... Maggie Doe's anyone remember these kinds of free pastimes. They were so much fun AND THEY DIDN'T COST ANYTHING.Swinging across a creek on a wild grapevine. -- Pulling young strong tree saplings down to the ground and while some held the top of the tree down on the ground one person would straddle the tree top then the ones holding it down would let go and send the person hanging on flying through the air. Then you had to hope that they were going to pull it back down for you so you could get off - HA.Clamping our shoes into large tin cans and walking around with them on our shoes.Making a large paddle and rolling a wheel around with the paddle.AND of course jumping rope. Throwing something over the roof of a building and yelling INDY OVER - someone on the other side was supposed to catch it.Gathering cattails and soaking them in kerosene and then lighting them for torches.Playing cops and robbers, cowboys and indians, Hide and Seek,Blind Man's Bluff (I only remember this name - I can't quite remember how it was played - it might have been where someone was blindfolded and then they got spun around and around to make them lose their sense of direction and then they had to find something???I'm sure there was more but I can't think of them right now. These were all LOTS OF FUN -Before the days of TV when we actually enjoyed going outside and playing.OK - NOW IT'S SOMEONE ELSE'S TURN!!! Guest guest
Growing up here, you could ride your horse on the beach. Now you cannot even take your dog on the beach, not even on a leash. We used to take off on our horses too, and not come home til dark. We would spend all morning catching crabs with scrap meat from the butcher and a scoop net, and then sell them to neighbors for spending money. Great way to pass a summer day. There were patches of woods everywhere where we played cowboys and other fantasy role playing games. Before we got horses we roamed everywhere in groups of kids on bicycles, dogs following. My kids never had the joy of taking the dogs around everywhere, off leash. What a wonderful time to be growing up that was, and we did not realize that it was not going to last forever for kids. I hope it is still like that somewhere for kids.. Guest guest
If I remember correctly, Laurie, you had to capture someone in a "basket" made of a circle created by two people clasping hands and making a circle of their arms. I knew the little song better than the game, but seem to remember playing it in elementary school. I didn't want to share it because it felt off topic from Steve, but I have a good feeling about this group. . .meglet
Guest guest
The way we played it was all of us got in a circle and one person was made "IT." They skipped around the circle carrying a hanky while we all sang..."A tisket a tasket a green and yellow basket. I wrote a letter to my love and on the way, I lost it...I lost it." The "IT" person dropped the hanky behind a person when the song ended and began to run around the circle. That person was supposed to pick up the hanky and start running after the "IT " person and try to tag them before they got to where the hanky was dropped. I haven't played it for probably 50 years, but all the fun comes flooding back. Maggie If I remember correctly, Laurie, you had to capture someone in a "basket" made of a circle created by two people clasping hands and making a circle of their arms. Guest guest
A variation of this was on the 4'th of July or New Year's Eve when firecrackers were allowed we (us kids) would get an emtied tin can. Make sure the top was completely open. Punch a small nail hole in the bottom middle of the can. Stick the fuse of the firecracker through the nail hole. Invert the can on the ground. Light the firecracker fuse & run like mad. then watch the resulting launching of the can into the air from the explosion. I would guess in coal mining country you would remember this one Find a bottle with a screw on cap Put in about 1/4 cup of carbide add water quickly screw on cap pitch the bottle and run expanding gas would blow up the bottle. We used the carbide in head lanterns for moonlight hunting. ps Around 1936 there was one home in the area that installed carbide lights in their house. I think they must have been rich folks.
