The phenomenon of insulin resistance (common in Type II diabetes) is one of the main features of 'Syndrome X' - considered an important risk factor for CVD - and is also one of the cardinal features of a condition involving the dysregulation of sexual hormones, namely Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome. Diabetes mellitus itself looks set to achieve epidemic proportions in Western countries in the coming decades. speakers Dr Wojciech Kielczynski is a medically qualified herbalist and scientist who has been practising phytotherapy since 1976, first in Poland and then in the UK and Australia. His herbal specialisation was undertaken with the School of Phytotherapy in the UK, where he graduated in 1985. From 1985 to 1993 he was Senior Scientist in Immunology at the Walter and Eliza Hall Institute in Melbourne, working on the immunological properties of carbohydrates in endocrinological diseases. At present he is in full-time private practice as a medical herbalist, caring for the Melbourne Polish community of 25,000 people. Dr Kielczynski was a foundation member of the Australian Traditional Medicines Evaluation Committee. Dr Georgios Marakis is a Postdoctoral Researcher at the Hugh Sinclair Unit of Human Nutrition, Reading University. His PhD thesis (2000) was an investigation into effective natural therapies (nutrition and phytotherapy) for Insulin Resistance Syndrome.
