Herbal and Nutritional Approaches to Diabetes and Dysglycaemia

Wojciech Kielczynski MD, PhD, MNIMH, MNHAA

Georgios Marakis PhD

Sunday 8 July 2001, 10.00 a.m. to 3.30 p.m.

The problem of dysglycaemia, or poor blood glucose control, is increasingly

recognized as an important etiological factor in the development of a number

of disease conditions, including not only diabetes but also such major

health threats as cardiovascular disease. The phenomenon of insulin

resistance (common in Type II diabetes) is one of the main features of

'Syndrome X' - considered an important risk factor for CVD - and is also one

of the cardinal features of a condition involving the dysregulation of

sexual hormones, namely Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome. Diabetes mellitus

itself looks set to achieve epidemic proportions in Western countries in the

coming decades.
