Thanks Alison and for advice re pt withdrawing from epam, will let you know how he gets on. Would like some advice for pt I've been seeing since May. Female, late 20's, PC vesicles in mouth with pins and needles sensation, mainly top gums, palatte, lower lip extending to chin, onset Nov 02, extremely painful. At same time dull, aching pain localised to medial epicondyle of left knee, with clicking of joint and numbness of middle 3 toes on left foot. Unsuccessfully treated with Aciclovir on several occasions. Occured at very stressful time at work. Pt describes herself as " control freak " , very obsessed with housework and cleanliness. Extremely tired at time of onset. I have treated with , Hypericum, Echinacea, Scut lat, Glyc and Tarax rad. Pt had 2 month gap with no Sx. Made big effort to reduce stress, reasses priorities and realised how much she was obsessing about housework. Great improvement in emotions, self worth, general enjoyment of life. Taking L-Lysine, avoiding Arginnine containing foods during outbreaks, increased EFA's, taking Vit C and Zinc to improve immunity. Eventually got long awaited hospital appt with Consultant in Infectious and Tropical Diseases who Dx Herpes simplex and explained Acyclovir had been ineffective as GP hadn't explained how to use it properly ie treatment must be commenced at first sign of Sx. Consultant prescribed Valaciclovir instead. All blood tests NAD except for white blood count was " above average " - pt did not ask for copy of results. After consultation, pt experienced sensations of new outbreak and commenced treatment - Sx did not become full-blown. Consultant explained that if she had more than 3 more outbreaks this year she would recommend years course of anti-viral medication. Pt wants to avoid this as hoping to start family when outbreaks under control. In last month has changed jobs which and felt start of new outbreak, taken medication, completed course and within 2 days felt return of Sx - occured on 2 occasions, with flare of knee Sx - all Sx worse prior to menses. Desperate to avoid long-term anti-virals. Has anyone experience with this? What else can I use to treat her. Am also giving mix for use prior to and during first days of menses which has reduced pre-menstrual pain and flow. Sorry for length of query. Not very good at being concise! Guest guest
Dear Hannah, I am new to posting here on the ukherbal-list, but here goes... Have you looked into Rosmarinus or any herbs containing Berberine alkaloids? Hydrastis, Mahonia aquifol.... all great for infections. Any immune supporting herbs like Astragalus, Echinacea? Is this patient debilitated from any other long standing infections or immune deficiency conditions? I'm thinking these herbs for internal dosage. Externally, I hear that Commiphora mol mol, Salvia off., Calendula, Stellaria, Symphytum, etc. can be used topically for sores. Also, with tissue healing and resistance, zinc would be indicated with some Vitamin C to facilitate absorption... 50 to 150 mg daily of zinc, and Vit C up to bowel tolerance in 500 mg increments. Hope I've gotten your mental 'juices' flowing... All the best, Tami Bronstein, BSc Phyt (Hons), MNIMH, CMT, AHG sundancewellness@...
