Guest guest
Dear Colleagues, I have been asked if neem oil (or any other part or extraction of Azadirachta indica) would be a safe and effective treatment for cat fleas. It certainly seems to be used to prevent and treat almost any parasitic infection in humans. I know that we cannot assume that what is safe and effective in one species is necessarily the same for another. I wonder if anyone has heard of it being used for fleas in cats and dogs. Is there a tradition of it being used in this way? I share my life with two cats on whom I do not wish to use systemic insecticides, nor do I want my patients and guests to run the risk of being bitten by fleas. (My treatment room is, of course, totally hygienic). Whilst essential oils like Eucalyptus and Lavender might be effective, I feel that they are too strong to be used on animals who will try to lick them off and ingest them immediately they are applied. Replies to this question might well be outside our official range of professional activity, but any personal anecdotes would be much appreciated.
