Guest guest
I've been fat all my life and I've always been active as well. I loved riding a bike and when I was in my 20s and weighed about 235, I rode 100 miles while many thin people weren't able to do the distance. I walked a lot as well yet I now have diabetes and I'm overweight. Yet I've always been overweight. Many people will say it's a matter of calories in, calories out but those who know what's happening in our lives know it's more than this. Recently I heard someone on TV say that it could be growth hormones in our food. I don't know if it's true but I wish scientists would take a look at our food and see if something is going on there -- with growth hormones or the way food is prepared (like the trans fat thing -- maybe there's other problems like that), or something else. Maybe it's not something to do with our food but until that's investigated, we won't know. Because it's happening to so many people when it wasn't such a problem in the past, I think it may be more than just overeating. Maybe not in my case because I've been fat a long time but now it affects so many people despite our changing lifestyles. While on the subject of food, commercial food (fruit & vegetables) is mostly grown for its looks and shipability. Taste falls by the wayside and I often wonder if nutrition is also affected. Meat contains hormones and other items that we don't need to consume but makes the animals grow faster and get bigger. What goes into our mouths doesn't seem to be a concern to (big, commercial) farmers. Perhaps it's up to us to protest by not eating this type of food when we can avoid it. Hopefully those doing this will get the message and begin growing food that is good for the consumer. Elaine > > Carl - > I taught History and Technology in Texas Public Schools.
