Guest guest
Darlene... I guess that is what contributes to my laid back reasoning that Kaitee will wear her glasses and hearing aides when she needs them... I am also hearing impaired.. I do a pretty good imitation of a deaf person should the need arise too lol... I dont disagree with them that Kaitee needs to wear her luxuray items to aide in her learning process... but when they try to insist that Kaitee needs to wear this all the time I balk ... if she is comfortable without them during play time and tv time and all that good stuff then so be it !! I think she is capable of making these decisions now and it is her comfort that is important not everyone elses. I found out I was hearing impaired when I was seventeen and tried to enter the air force.... I was kinda shocked because ummm for seventeen years things sounded okay to me lol... my first pair of hearing aides... okay I was pretty amazed at the things I didnt realize made noise lol... but it actually got aggravating fast!!.. Yup it would of been nice to be able to hear things better (although I didnt know it at the time) while attending school.... the next time anyone has a complaint about their childs speech therapist visualize this.... and this is trully one of the few memories I have of school.... here I am a seven year old child, taken out of class to a bus... the speech teacher is a Elvis Presley wannabe.. with jowls like jello... the speech aide is this black box, and a pile of ibm cards... unbeknown to me, becasue it was in a pitch I could not hear, when these cards went thru this machine the letter sounds would be said... R ... rrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr now say rrrrrrrrrrrrr... I would sit there like a lump not knowing what was expected of me because I didnt hear anything except a whirl... then have this speech teacher get right in your face and scream.. and he spit when he talked... say RRRRRRRRRRRR what are you deaf and stupid...he was definetly a frustrated person lol... he was a good teacher becasue by the time I figured out I wasnt hearing right I knew it meant I was stupid.. and I didnt want to be stupid so I wasnt about to point this out... but I taught myself ways to avoid this being noticed.. those cards had numbers on them, eventually I was able to place the number with the letter and from his spitting in my face all the time come up with a pretty good repeat of what I was suppose to say... special services have definetly come a longggg way today lol... I will do everything in my power to provide my child with a better chance at learning and growing like a typical child... but I do know how those darn things feel in your ears, I do know how aggravating it is to hear things that you dont really need to hear ... like them bugs that are driving everyone nuts... it is really really nice to have the option of listening to them or not lol.. Glasses, I dont need to wear mine to use the computer, or read.. I choose not to wear them when mowing the lawn, or situations where I sweat... (why our lawn always looks like a blind person mowed it : ) course if I didnt wear them when driving... I wouldnt hear the screams of those I ran over... or the sirens ... hmmmmm debbi
Guest guest
Debbi - I totally understand Kaitee's reaction to wearing the hearing aids and glasses - I too wear one hearing aid and glasses - Hearing aids are very small and light but if you are used to space being there and there something new in your ear - it is very distracting and gets uncomfortable - just like a rock in your shoe - it is fitted to the ear but it is annoying because you are not used to it. Sometimes I want to take it out and bury it in the sand ;-) - but it is important and very expensive and I wear them on Tues and Thurs when I have my meetings and I need to hear. (well the glasses I wear everyday because I need to drive to get here). Oh have I been here lol... so many 300 dollars done the drain!!.. But in a sense you are correct, if the glasses are doing their job , she would be more willing to wear them... but at three years old there are so many things that factor into this.. and at three years old she probably cant tell you the problem.. so it becomes frustrating for both of you. Kaitee goes every six months for eye exams... and I cannot afford specialists every six months and new glasses so we have checked around until we found people she works well with... Lenscrafters!! And we have received the wrong perscription from others before this... But other things could work in here also, the way the glasses feel to her, maybe they dont fit on her face well, the lenses could be smudged (kids tend to push them up on their faces with their fingers right in the middle of the lens) I wear glasses and it is a pain to have to keep pushing them up on your face. With kaitee , she wears her glasses in school... she doesnt wear them at home... if she chooses not to.. (I dont wear my glasses all the time, if I need them I wear them other wise off they go) The way I feel about it is , in school her vision is important to her learning.. at home unless she is doing homework or reading.. it is her choice on whether she wears the glasses or not.. I dont pressure the situation, what I do put pressure on is care of the glasses... if they are not on her face they should be in the case... if she chooses to take the glasses off she must stop what she is doing and put them away... we havent lost a pair of glasses in a year now the dog hasnt eaten any lately, and they havent been stepped on... The wrap around glasses were my total favorite!! she has outgrown them though .. the last pair she chose were blue.. (she always chooses ) the pair before that purple... (we had new lenses put in these and they are play glasses) but if you are comfortable they are the right prescription, they fit well, all that stuff... then dont pressure her.. she hasnt walked into any walls lately has she?? Set up times when she has to wear them and then the rest let her decide.. as she grows older she will wear them more and more... if you arent comfortable with the prescription.. take her somewhere else and have her eyes examined... I have done this . Now Kaitee can tell me if the glasses help or if they are wobbly lol... this helps .. We have the same rules with her hearing aides.. she has to wear them to school, the rest of the time she chooses ... but the care of them is stressed.. they must be put away... try replacing a 2700 hearing aide a couple times... oh boy that gets interesting lol.... We found her hearing aides and glasses buried in the sand one time... they all flush down toilets very nicely... and the dogs love them... we are in the process of replacing one hearing aide now because it is missing in action.. thankfully I took insurance out on them ... Guest guest
I'd say the glasses will just take time. My daughter Molly is deaf and has worn hearing aids since she was two months old. It took awhile for her to get used to wearing them. Then, of course, she went through a phase where she would pull them out and look at me and grin. She finally got to the point, though, that if one would work loose, she would push it back in and if it would fall out or get pulled out accidentally she would try to put it back in. She has a cochlear implant now and we have had to go through some of the same phases with the processor, although she is becoming more and more accustomed to it every day. cakj _____ From: Tina Jordan Sent: Wednesday, June 09, 2004 7:10 AM To: MosaicDS Subject: Starting preschool and new glasses Hi everybody, I want to welcome the new families and say thatI also experienced the obsession with MDS when Kelsey was first born and probably for about the first two years of her life. Well Kelsey is now three and started her first day at preschool yesterday. She did fabulously. When I came back to get her after 3 hours, she didn't want to come home. We also just did a re-evaluation through her early on program and she is functioning at age-level in all areas except for speech and language. She has a moderate speech delay but so did my oldest daughter at this age. Our biggest frustration right now is that she recently got glasses and won't keep them on. In fact we are on the second pair because she has hidden the first pair so well that we can't find them ($300.00 down the drain!). We ordered the cable temples that wrap completely around her ear but that doesn't slow her down from pulling them off and sending them sailing through the air. Any tips on keeping glasses on such a young child? We thought that if they helped her see she would be motivated to keep them on, so I am wondering if they are the right prescription?
