Guest guest Posted June 24, 2008 Report Share Posted June 24, 2008 Hi, Margaret, I don't know how to trace company registrations, but if you are suspicious, perhaps you can reply with a quote and a time frame, ask for written confirmation and a partial payment upfront. You can explain that this is your procedure with new customers. That way you will at least have written record of the " contract. " Or you might first ask more details of the project -- whether it will be published and where, for instance, explaining that you know certain journals have formatting requirements and you would like to provide a publication-ready translation (or some such), and without that needed information you cannot give an accurate quote or completion date, which need to mutually agreed upon before you accept the job. Perhaps by striking up a conversation with the buyer, you can get enough information to allay your suspicions (or not, in which case you can decline the job).
