I have never had to go thru what I am going thru right now.

We recently lost the health insurance on Kaitee, we had the state

insurance, but because of income and lost of a dependant we no longer

qualify... so I have been on a hunt...

I have met and intently educated quite a few sterotype people in the

last week, and try doing this without a attitude is hard.

The one I spoke to today is at least going to look into things to see

if she cant be covered somehow.

the subject of pre existing conditions always comes up on these darn

applications lol, and down syndrome seems to be a instant

rejection... and I am ready to scream.

Today I actually got my other daughter covered, only because I have

pretty much exhausted the list and did control my anger over peoples

reaction to Kaitee... the truth is I dont understand why she cant be

covered.. she has no physical problems due to MDS, other then hearing

aides which most insurance companies do not cover anyhow...she sees

no specialist and all her therapies are covered in school.

Today the guy told me that it wasnt possible for her to have DS,

after looking at a picture and hearing of her physical capabilities..

that she should of never been labelled, and I was doing her more harm

then good... well he got a MDs education and changed his outlook, or

maybe he didnt , maybe he just took my money and got out or here

lol... it just really angers me anymore, when people hear down

syndrome and they automatically think blob...

Debbi,

I am an underwriter for an insurance company. What state do you live in?

Maybe I could make a few calls for you and see whats up?

Debbi,

What about the law of " pre-existing conditions " ? I thought there was a new law

that said they couldn't refuse you for pre-existing conditions. I do have a

question for you...When you began your search of insurance, did you say that

Kaitee had Ds or MDS? I agree that if she doesn't have any heart conditions, it

shouldn't be a problem for them, but then again, people WITH heart conditions

should be able to get insurance as well.

Kristy,

Different states have different laws...IE New York is great...South Carolina is

horrible.

We live in land. And from what I am hearing the law just doesnt

seem to apply to us.

I use MDS not DS and only because they will find it in her medical

records. the one I talked to and actually put a application in for

my other daughter was going to check out to see if they wouldnt cover

Kaitee for what I wanted it for... security that if she does get

sick, falls breaks a bone I will have coverage... I showed him her

picture, we talked about her... he didnt buy the different forms of

DS , but insisted that it sounded like Kaitee had been misdiagnoised

and the doctors just wanted to label her... He told me to have her

retested and see for myself lol... good thing I have a sense of humor

trust me... I explained to him that Kaitee has had very few medical

problems, does not see specialist other then a audiologist , she is

just like anyother kid out there...the problems MDS cause are not

treated with doctors ... she has her therapies in school, last year

she went for her yearly physical , her ped did teh necessary blood

testing (because I pay outta my pocket even though we had medical

assistance) .. she went to the audiologist, which is thru the school

so there is no charge except for earmolds... medical assistance

picked this up (30.00 charge) ... she has had her eyes checked twice,

and new glasses both times... both times I paid out of my pocket,

because I wanted to take her to the doctor of my choice........and

that is it... she takes allergy meds, but her ped gives me samples of

them and I never fill a prescription....

but instead of looking into this they focus on the down sydnrome,

refusing to see that it isnt sterotype... and call me and tell me

down syndrome isnt insurable.. of course I roll my eyes and say how

about kaitee then...maybe I will try applying without telling them..

this year she needs new hearing aides... but that will be taken care

of ... I bought the last ones , somehow I will do it this time too..

We are self employed, and my husband has a heart condition which

makes it difficult to get a policy ... he gets treated thru a

hospital that picks up all the costs , as long as he allows his

infromation to be used for teaching .. seems fair to us lol.

his meds are provided free of charge.

I can get on another insurance thru the government for Kaitee... it

is called MITP or something like that... but to cover her it will

cost 325.00 per month... and it doesnt provide a great coverage

either... this is for uninsurable people...

I just have to take a step back a deep breath and gung ho... find a

way to remeady this situation lol...
