Guest guest
There are always two sides to any issue. Carol Mass has chosen to ignore our side. I recommend you do like her but in reverse, chose to ignore her side. This way it won't bother you as much ! Guest guest
Regarding Oprah show you spoke about: Seems to me when anyone uses the words " all " and " every " they aren't referring to me. I don't choose to live in pain, and I certainly don't think that my problems unresolved problems with my father when I was a teenager over 30 years ago is to blame for my Reiters Syndrome/Spondylitis. Most discernable diseases have physical or biological processes as the cause. Yes, stress plays its part, and, Yes, some folks get better when they work through some unresolved issues, but I don't think that will apply to " every " or " all " persons. I guess you have to arrogant in order to sell books. If I had been watching the show, I'd have turned it off, too. Ray ---------------------------------------------------- Reach me by ICQ. Guest guest
I can't just ignore that woman on Oprah. Fibromyalgia is still considered a new disease. It is difficult to dx and for years thousands of us have been told it's all in our head and if we just relaxed we would be better. We are finally at a point were the medical community is starting to believe in it's existence and is starting to do research. So to have someone come on tv and say that it's caused by our past sets our healing process back. This woman is dangerous, we don't want to be sent back to psychiatrists to see what is unresolved, I want to see a doctor or a physical therapist. ~››~››~››~››~››~››~››~››~› Success is not measured by how well we deal with plan " A " but by how well we deal with plan " B " . ‹‹§‹‹§‹‹§‹‹§‹‹§‹‹§‹‹§‹‹§
Guest guest
Although I realize that whatever this gal on Oprah said was pretty upsetting...sure sounds like it was off the wall AND sounds like she's just out to sell her book, I also can't keep quiet any longer on this. There IS a link to FMS and our emotional health. There's a link to our TOTAL physical health and our emotional health. This is something that's largely been ignored for quite awhile and now some doctors seem to be 'discovering' this! Mind you, I'm not saying that FMS is caused ONLY by emotional problems and to say that and dismiss the patient to a psychiatrist/psychologist is not the answer. However, for a doctor to ignore the emotional side of any illness, whether the emotional problems are caused by the fact that we don't feel well or if they were there before we started feeling physically ill, is wrong. I have FMS. Mine most likely was set off by the fact that I have chronic pain, it never ends, due to a spine injury and surgery...and now arthritis and another disc herniation. However, I see a definite link between my emotional well-being and my FMS symptoms. Unresolved issues often mean anger, especially anger that is not expressed in any manner. My FMS symptoms went off the board after my Mom died. Not really because of the grieving for the loss of my Mom (I know she's happy and no longer suffering from osteoarthritis) but largely because of the bringing to a head the fact that my sister abuses alcohol and I finally, about a month and a half BEFORE my Mom died, told sister that I could no longer accept the abusive behavior she displayed when drinking. She severed all communication with me. The relationship with my sister has been changed DRAMATICALLY since then and wham..my FMS symptoms went haywire. As I started, at the beginning of the Summer and especially after Labor Day weekend, to come to a resolution about this issue I note my FMS symptoms receding quite a bit. Coincidence?? I think not. So... I agree that it's a darn shame that this gal was on Oprah blabbing away about FMS and making it sound like anyone with FMS is a 'head-case'. I also can't ignore that there is, deep in there, some truth to her observations. A good doctor will dx FMS carefully and treat the patient as best as possible with medications and whatever treatments she feels will help but I would not feel that it's out of place for a Dr. to suggest that a FMS patient also look inside themselves, with or without professional help, to make sure they're emotional health is taken care of. Ya know... as far as I'm concerned about Oprah, anyone who watches that show and takes whatever the guests have to say as the gospel truth needs a reality check anyway. I'm not singling out Ophrah...... the whole media circus we have today, TV, print, the web, and gobs of self-help books, needs to be taken, if taken at all, with a HUGE grain of salt. So I wouldn't worry TOO much about this gal's coverage on the show. CULater, Ruthie =========================== Ruthie Cunliffe K2ZQ ruthie@... http://www.cunliffegroup.com/ruthie/ Oh, no! Guest guest
I didn't see Oprah, but I have been reading all the posts today about this. THere is a middle line here. Stress does cause flare ups, and it has been shown that many fibro and arthritis patients latent disease did become active due to a psychological trauma. It just can't be generalized either way. We have to be careful how it is worded and how it is explored. But the stress factor, and the emotional factor cannot be discounted either. When I am under stress all my body functions leap in to action, including my pain and disease. Do I think it was caused by the stress,no, but it certainly does accelerate it.
