Hi ladies,I've been asked by our local breastfeeding coalition to do a presentation on breastfeeding multiples.  I am a mom of twins myself so I am doing it from a personal case study perspective and interspersing generalized info in-between.  I wanted to get your input on what you think are the most important things to share with folks who are working with multiples as far as how to support moms bf multiples. I will obviously be giving them Gromada's website info as a resource! FYI, this is a mixed group that consists of LC's, public health professionals, nutritionists, etc.

I am biased in having mopped up ridiculous advice for mothers of multiples that

do NOT take into account the realities of her situation. I think the most

ridiculous GENERIC advice I ever heard came out of what was reported to me as

having been said in the CLC course for triplets: feed two babies at the same

time and finish with the third offering both breasts. I worked with a mother of

triplets who actually had enough milk for all three babies. I think she had the

best supply I've ever seen for any mother. And she was not suffering from

oversupply or plugged duct. Each baby was competent in feeding from the breast.

Nevertheless, even for this mother with a wonderful supply, it was not

physically possible to feed all three babies in a session if she wanted to even

have five minutes extra to pee before the next feeding. We developed a

PRAGMATIC plan unique to her that worked well for her and her three babies.

I think any session on multiples MUST include the realities of the POTENTIAL

risks of:

a) prematurity which increases with the order of multiples

having one or more babies who are not YET efficient feeders

c) issues of supply evolving from time management issues

d) issues of supply due to endocrinological issues in cases of assisted

reproduction

e) issues of bonding with EACH individual baby if time is not created for

individual contact with that baby (e.g. not treating the babies as a unitary

task - -but adding time for babies as individual human beings0

Yes, absolutely assuming the best possible outcome, but being prepared for

PRAGMATiC solutions that are customized for the individual mother and each

individual baby that makes sense as a whole so that no one individual in the

triad or quadrad or quintad, etc dominates the relationship.

Hi - I recently came across this youtube video on nursing twins and was

impressed by the Mom's down-to-earthness! It may not work well for a

presentation, but could be a nice resource for future viewing.

I recently saw a set of twins whose mother had refused to be induced unless

given a medical reason. The majority of twins who I see have been induced

deliveries or early. It was such a joy to see these full term twins nursing -

what a world of a difference.
