Is he anxious, are his bowels flaccid, is it due to liver dysfunction, has he been investigated for bowel tumours, any other pelvic organ problems (prostate or prolapse) etc...? Good symptomatic treatment that is simple is to use is psyllium husks as they help to both soothe the gut and bulk the motions. 1+ teaspoonful in a glass of water 2 - 3 times daily.
