Guest guest
I was asked a question the other day by a farmer regarding grass fed beef. His question was regarding what to feed them in the winter months. As he put it...on his acreage he can successfully raise 30 - 35 animals in the summer months when the grass is growing but in the winter months, if the animals are to be grass fed he can only raise 5. His assumption was that in order for an animal to be grass fed it had to be green grass fed. I think that's an incorrect assumption and was wondering if someone could provide some additional information here regarding grass fed beef. If the animals were fed a hay product in the winter wouldn't that qualify as grass fed and still keep the CLA up? Isn't it the grain that's the problem and not the hay? If anyone has additional information or can stear me to a publication that discusses this in further detail I would greatly appreciate it. I told him I would research this further as he's very interested in switching over to grass fed animals. Thanks for your help!
