I have RA which is very close to lupus and my daughter has lupus. I will

send everything I have.

Let me explain chemo drug for arthritis(lupus, is a form of arthritis).

They have found that lesser amounts of chemo drugs than used in cancer

can modify or slow down the disease. Sometimes even

into remission. They are called DMARDS, disease modifyers. There are

many, methotrexate, imuran neoral, plaquenil,

chlormabucil , cyclosporine...they do have side effects, yes, but they

are the only way to stop the progression of the disease. Lupus can kill,

becuase it will attack the internal organ system before RA for instance

will. He needs to be encouraged to go on the DMARDS as SOON as possible.

They will obviously haveto choose carefully which one as to his liver

problems, but it can done. Cortisone can also be given IV, called

Solu-medrol, or methylprednisalone. That can give up to amonth of some

relief. He needs also to be on stronger pain meds. I have had RA for

almost 16 years with no remission, and I use percocet every 4 hours,

roxycodone for breakthru pain, and a fentanyl pain patch every day. Plus

they are now installying the morphine pumps in the spine for arthritis

conditions. I would say his best bet is to get a new rheumatologist

first , and then get checked into a hospital to get this flare under

control and get on some stable meds. I will send him all the info I

have.

Love Lyn

Dear Sweet Lyn,

Thanks sooooo much. I will alert him. I think he needs to be on this list

too. I feel so sorry for him. My sister is an RN and can give him anything

at home, but she seems to be at a loss as to what to do. Her health is not

all that great...she is full of calcium deposits and still driving 100 mi a

day to Paris Tx to work on the floor in hospital there. Her expertise for

years was in CCU, and she can tell you all about that, but they sure need

help here. I have been trying to get them OFF the fats and other junk for

quite some time. I told Leon that he had autoimmune disease of some sort

long before the Docs finally dx'd it. Recognized the symptoms. Thanks a

bunch agin buddy! And you better listen to the Doctors too and do what you

are told to do...I may have to come up there and sit on you! *L*

If you like to read, let me suggest " Songs In Ordinary Time " by McGarry

.

It was an " Oprah " selection and is a super good book for whiling away the

hours. It took me a little bit to get into it, but once I did I was

gone...did not want it to end.

Warm fuzzy HUGS!

Andy,

I use emsom salts and baking soda in a good hot bath. You know how you used

to soak

sprains, etc. in epsom salts? Matter of fact, did too much walking today

and plantar fascitis is kicking up, so headed to soak my feet now. There is

some good info on detoxing at www.dorway.com *S*

Also, he either has to make permanent travel arrangement or get a local doc who

can cooperate with a good specialist, if there are none in immediate area. Yes,

I know asking 2 dox to talk to each other is crazy. Especially when only 1 can

bill.

Yup Ken that is all true. And he needs a rheumatologist. They are the

only ones with the savvy to treat lupus.

I travel 2 hours at least onceamonth to see mine.Bummer....

Lyn and Ken,

Gave sister a quick call and advised to expect avalanche of information. As

I understand,

the doctor he is seeing in OKC is Rheumy, BUT is out of town for three

weeks, with no one to cover??? He had missed his last appt. as sis had to

work and there is no way he could stand to drive the 4 hrs. to OKC in the

shape he was in. I might suggest they ask at church for someone to drive

Leon to OKC for appts. He is so DAMN proud, and has had quite a time

accepting limitations ever since his back surgery. I should think someone

at the church can and will help if they will ask....sis was audited by IRS

because they could not believe that anyone would give as much money to

church as she does, but she is a firm 10%er. I suggested that she read very

carefully the info that Lyn is sharing and she worships her husband and will

go to any lengths to help him. Thanks again all.

Big Hugs,

Di

Here you're more likely to get audited if you didn't give 10% to the

church.

Diane-They should have got their avalanche of material from me

already....hope so!

I tried not to include anything super technical, but I figured if she is

an RN she could appreciate something more than the average layperson. So

I included lab tests and their results for lupus, etc.

I hope it helps. You tell them, remission is possible. My daughter is a

prime example.
