Nina Moliver wrote: Nanette, Please tell us how things went in boiling your rice, rather than pressure-cooking it. I stopped pressure-cooking my rice one day about 5 years ago as an experiment. To my amazement, I found that I was suddenly clear of a major chronic health problem - I wouldn't say totally clear, but bothered by it with substantially less frequency. In addition, I discovered that I had a newfound interest in hard, crunchy things, like nuts and seeds. Before, when I had eaten nuts and seeds, I found the whole combination too tight, dry and yang. Now, I found I needed them. And - when I started eating them, I discovered that I was in dire need of them, or to be more specific, in dire need of fats. This led to my discovery that it was a deficiency of fats which was contributing in a major way to my bone loss. I say "contributing", because I am sad to report that my struggles with bone loss are not over. I just had a bone density test done this week, and the results were not good. I was stunned, because all of the parallel indicators for the last year (i.e., skin, hair and nails) have never been better, and in fact my bone mass had been increasing in the year's prior test. I am almost at a loss to figure out what to do next. The only thing I can see right now is that for the last year I have been eating the virgin coconut oil (VCO), which speeds up the metabolism and strengthens the thyroid function. I don't have a thyroid gland; I am on medication. I learned recently that I have been taking too much medication - in other words, I should have reduced my dose when I started the VCO a year ago. Too much thyroid medication creates bone loss. Apparently, for me it did, as it has in the past. If that's not the answer, then I have NO CLUE. I do know that VCO is supposed to be a prime remedy for osteoporosis. I believe that it is helping me, but that the excess thyroid level was hurting me more than the VCO was helping. Nothing can ruin you like a physician's drugs. They can overpower all the good eating in the world. Thoughts and feedback from knowledgeable people are greatly appreciated. Nina Thanks for the help! I am very grateful for all the messages helping me in my shopping quest. Thank you so much! I'm looking forward to seeing the types of mochi and trying it in a waffle iron. I'm glad to hear I can store daikon in the refrigerator. I'm sure I will be able to recognize burdock now. The market I'm talking about is Ta Lin International Market in Albuquerque. It is enormous and divided into sections by city (Bangkok, Manila, Cairo, London, etc.). I'd be very surprised if they didn't have everything I'm looking for. Today's kitchen experiments include trying to boil short-grown brown rice instead of pressure cook it, Pirello's Millet and Veggie Burgers, and some Sweet Vegetable Drink. Guest guest
Sorry, Ilanit - that is very exciting information about Steve Acuff. This will mean that VCO will start to make its way into the mb community. I think it is a needed change for us.
