Many of us have needed, and had serious trouble with anti-inflammatories.

I'm sure there are some heavy-duty war stories out there. I have one to

that I'm going to hold off relating just now.

I wanted to mention that there are alternative ways of taking

anti-inflammatories that bypass the stomach & liver, that are rarely

considered. For one, indocin is made in suppository form and effective in

lower doses than oral. They are more expensive ($3. per 50 mg), but

available & rarely prescribed. However, Dr. Gordon Gwosdow, Pharm.D, who I

have asked to act as a resource for us on medication, has described to me

their wide use in some elder nursing homes & hospices; with low gastric

risk & higher per-dose effectiveness. He notes that because of the cost,

regular indocin tablets can be administered the same way (with cocoa

butter). Doctors can be asked about this!

Also, I just received information on a new class of NSAIDS called -2

inhibitors, which protect the digestive system & are awaiting FDA approval

with drug companies hoping to have it available for Rx by 1999.

This is good news -- I'm currently on 1500 mg Lodine per day, plus

Hydrocodone 5/500 up to 4x prn.
