Kam,

Each of us is an individual.. our bodies and our lifestyles are all different.. Our challenge, as folks with thyroid disorders, is the find the combination that works for us.. to bring us to better health and feeling well.. to me that is the bottom line.. feeling well...

You've found that you need more T4... so if that is what is working for you I wouldn't be too concerned with the philosophies of others... just don't forget to keep in mind that by watching what others are doing and have tried you may find something that works better or different...

You could be one of the lucky ones that has good T4 conversion.. so you need to take more to cover what is being converted... Just another body chemistry mystery! hehehhe

I recently joined the NaturalThyroidHormones yahoo group. I know there are some people from this group who post on that group, and I have a question. There seems to be a consensus in that naturals group that the only level that matters is free T3--that the goal is to get that in the upper part of the normal range. In this (Texas) group, I've picked up that the consensus is that the goal is to get both FT3 AND FT4 in the upper ranges. In fact, when I had my first blood tests, my FT4 was proportionately lower than my FT3, so I added 25 mcg synthroid to the 3 grains/day of Armour I was taking, and after about 6 weeks, I already feel a lot better.

I posted something to that effect on the naturals group, and someone there asked me why I thought the FT4 was important, and I realized I don't know the answer to that question. I mean, empirically I know I feel better after adding the T4, but I don't know the mechanism. I gather the idea over there is that since the T3 is the active form and some people have trouble converting from T4 to T3, if you get the T3 level up, it doesn't matter if you're low on T4.

I thought that some people might need extra T3, some people might need extra T4, and some people might do fine on just Armour alone. Also, I mentioned something about the fact that pig thyroid isn't exactly the same as human thyroid, and got the response that since Armour is standardized, it isn't the same as the natural levels in pig thyroid.

Anyone have any help/advice for me on this?

Kam
