Guest guest
Hi, Jaye. Please share responses here. I would love to know more about this situation. From what I've read, low testosterone (yes, women need testosterone, just not as much as men) can cause low/no sex drive. We know that high testosterone, such as with theca lutein cyst, can stop milk production, but I'm wondering if testosterone at an *appropriate* level would have any impact. If her testosterone is low, and came up to normal, it might help. Trouble is, do we have any idea what "normal" testosterone level in a breastfeeding woman would be? We know "normal" estrogen level in a breastfeeding woman is lower than "normal" in a non-breastfeeding woman. Guest guest
What exactly does she not enjoy? Is there discomfort? Is she not reaching orgasm as she used to? Is she just so flat out exhausted that she cannot enjoy it in general? I would need to know more about what 'not enjoying it' means exactly. Guest guest
I second Pam's idea - what exactly does she mean. I am also wondering how old is baby or is it babies? I am confused with " I have a 15 month old son " and the period " 1st time since baby almost 3 months ago " . Does she have 2 young children a year apart in age? If so that is a big part of it right there - I don't think hormones, weaning or anything like that will help (have 2 kids 2 years apart - both nursing & in diapers, with 2 older kids my libido was ziltch for a long time). It's almost like your body is working overtime to delay another pregnancy. Guest guest
Hmmm. I took that to mean she has a 15mo and got her first period 3 months ago. A lot of times, if your estrogen rises enough to give you periods, you also have an increase in libido. (I know, I know, estrogen certainly isn't the only part of whether or not you are interested in sex!) I was thinking this mother was thinking that if she's had 3 cycles, she should be more interested than she is. Guest guest
Dee, That makes a bit more sense. But libido (for women) is wrapped in so many other things than just estrogen (or testosterone). The reason why they have yet to find a female version of viagra! I would ask her what would she need happening in her life to get more desire - is it just low hormones, is she very tired all the time, does she feel like she should get more help from her partner, less stress at work, etc. Even pelvic floor issues. This may be way into the TMI range but I had so many issues my OB/GYN sent me to a specialized PT for pelvic floor rehab. My next yearly appointment I told him the PT work great (I could get in a jolly jump with the kids again). My sex life also improved - I had more desire, it was either the PT or my dh not being such a jerk anymore. He laughed and said a lot of people don't realize a lot of a woman's desire can be linked to men's behavior and life issues in general. These cases always make me think that as LC's we do more than just breastfeeding - we cover so many other topics related to new parents. Guest guest
Hi All – been so busy just now getting to my digests! With my client who had the Libido question: She is very active, very healthy, gets good sleep – all is great. She simply has ZERO sex drive. Nothing. Nada. Her husband has a high sex drive and would be happy to indulge 1-3 times per day. She’d be happy to indulge…never. That’s why the testosterone thought is a great one. But as Dee asks what is a normal testosterone level in a woman who is lactating? I don’t know…Anyone have any thoghts? Guest guest
Maybe she could get a testosterone test anyway and see what her score is in relation to RoN for non-lactating women. If it's way low from that, perhaps a low dose could be initiated and then observe the milk supply. Stop if it impacts supply, keep going if it doesn't. Of course, she would need to be working with a *very* cooperative doctor. Guest guest
apparently, according to a woman I know who has Grave's disease and has been on a bender doing thyroid research, one of the very first signs of low thyroid is diminished libido and she has noticed, herself, that when the meds for hyperthyroid lowered her thyroid levels too much - aurevoir l'amour... might be worth looking into with an endocrinologist. Guest guest
Hi, Jaye. I attended the first day of a mental health conference here today. One of the sessions was about medications. They were talking about some antidepressants raising prolactin levels, which lowers sex drive. Reminded me of this post! Could it be that this mother has more prolactin than most mothers? That could be checked by blood test. Or, perhaps she is more sensitive to the effects of those prolactin spikes every time her little guy nurses, and so she has no interest in sex? Not sure that anything could be done about it if this is the explanation, but if this really would be the explanation then at least she would know *why* and that it really is a temporary condition since every child does eventually wean.
