It's funny but it's scary. I have people who say things like that all

the time. I don't look like I'm in pain. People seem to have an image of

what pain should look like. And if you don't look like that you're not

in pain. I've been in pain for about 35 years now, I think I've learned

how to put on a happy face by now.

What's scary about that statement though is that it came from someone in

the medical profession.

Maybe you should bite his ear off.

See what happens when you're too nice ! Let that be a lesson. What you

should do is put on a pair of old greasy overalls, find yourself an old

shotgun and on the way into town, pick up a nice piece of roadkill. Go to

his office and stand there with the shotgun in one hand, the roadkill in the

other, and tell him it's his turn !

What's worse is if you do allow the pain to show through for what it really

is, then you are dubbed as being histrionic. This is a no win situation in

many cases! I agree that for those of us who have been in pain for

many years, we either learn to cope, put on that happy face even when we

don't feel like it, or else we end up making ourselves and everyone around

us even more miserable. Otherwise, I don't think we could bear the

overwhelming nature of it all.

Also, do you find yourself lying when people ask how you are?

Ok, now that I'm halfway back among the living, I guess I should

introduce myself.

I describe myself as suffering from invisible disabilities and also

controversial disabilites as in people don't believe they exist or that

they are caused by stress.

I have severe anemia- 8.6 instead of 12-16, meds only take it to 10.

I have fibromyalgia, asthma and ADHD. I have been in pain since the age

of six when I was in a severe car accident and refused medical

treathment. i believe my mother and grandmother also have/ had fibro

due to the same car accident. I did not start receiving medical

attention for my pain until I went to college and was on my own. I have

been to PT, pain management clinics, the whole nine yards. Yet I was not

dx'd with the fibro, asthma and ADD until the last two years. Since

prober dx I have been able to reduce my pain level. Before my dx I was

taking 800 mg of IB every 8 hours every single day. Now I rarely take

OTC strength, maybe once a week. Of course I had to give up a lot of

activities to reduce my pain level.

I work full-time and have two furkids.

Ken, what a great ideal I bet he would never even think much less say such

a thing after that. Some people can be such jerks I was told one time that

I was just to nice a person and belief me I am not a to nice person. If I

see someone who needs help and I can help I will but is not like I am

wearing a sign on my backside saying kick me I'm to nice a person to get

upset over it.This was a supervisor on a job in a bank I guess they want

back stabbing uncaring Sob's their thats why I loved working for Doc I was

never accused of being to nice.

That is to funny she could even give him a choice since she was to nice and

cheerful to be in pain. #1 u want me to shoot u with this here shot gun

cause that is really going hurt me alot more than you or do u want a

sporting chance I'll just run u down with my car and that will only hurt

my car and not me, and oh by the way is this pleasant enough for u?

Hi ,

Your difficulties are certainly not invisible to you! I hardly think

there is anyone on our list who has not been supersaturated with the " its in

your head' trip. You obviously are a hihg achiever (like the rest of us,

except for me, Mike & who are just bums) so why would a person like

you want to make up obstacles. Bottom line, logic for most people is usually

out to lunch! You have managed life despite significant limitations. Perhaps

you got good at it since you started so early.

Have a question for you: do you get Fibrofog (fibro

spacey/inattentive/memory loss feeling) & if so, how do you tell the

difference between this & ATDD?

And welcome to life on the list!

Pati,

Sad that in our time nice becomes just another 4 letter word. Anyway,

think MEAN.

One psychological technique in getting angry at people (or just acting that

way) is to look at their mouths - more impersonal than eye contact, &

visualize them in riduculous ways-- standing in their underwear, have 16 foot

heads, being baloons that you can stick with a pin) and also just yelling

nasty things at them. You don't have to feel them, just yell them. This is

assertiveness training.

Problem is, if you get nasty, they'll probably tell you you have pain

because you're angry. Anger is often regarded a clinical sumptom. I still lean

toward 'bite his ear off!

There really isn't a differnce between the fibrofog and the ADD fog.

Fog is fog.

I get told that I am too nice, too pleasant, and hence that people will walk

all over me.

Often this comment comes from the strangest sources.

Personally, I use an ascerbic response as a last resort, unless of course

the context demands otherwise.

Generally I find that the assertive " strong " persons miss too much of the

wonders of the world.

I suppose in other ways I behave in a contradictory manner to this type of

view, but I am who I am, and if you can't be happy with that ... What can

one say?
