Guest guest
I teach a childbirth class and I encourage the moms to hand express at about 38 weeks and to save whatever they get. Two things this accomplishes first mom gets used to massaging her breasts and extracting milk with out having any pressure. If by chance she and her baby are separated there will be her own colostrum to give or if she is told she has to supplement she is prepared. Guest guest
I recommend to do it. Especially if mom is diabetic or gestational diabetic without any risks of miscarriage. There's a protocol. Guest guest
Would you mind including the protocol if you have a minute? I have a mom in mind for this. Guest guest
Visited a neighbor on Saturday with a 54 hour old, 6lbs.9oz. baby boy, who was already given formula because in the hospital they told her his sugar was a little low. And she was sitting on her couch with a 2 ounce bottle of formula from the hospital. She said she is trying to nurse for 5 or 10 minutes a few times a day before she gives him the bottle. Grrr. I said, "didn't you try to express any to take with you or even just hand express a few drops in the hospital as I taught you 6 weeks ago?" Of course, she said no and then she asked when she should start drinking the tea and taking the Go-Lacta that I had given her as a gift. I also had given her verbal and hand written instructions on starting the Go-Lacta in her 35th week or at least 10 days before her EDD. Doesn't help sometimes does it? Moms don't listen, don't remember or don't think we know what we are talking about. It was a short visit because I was really on my way to a consult but wanted to wish her congratulations and to remind her that I am right across the street. So I gave her just a short pep talk about just letting the baby nurse and check my handout for how much the baby actually needs on the particular days and that I can come to help with any questions or whatever. And she says, "yes, they told me all of those things." I have a feeling she won't be really breastfeeding and what she does won't be for very long. Sorry for the vent, it's just so frustrating. I thought I had given her all of the knowledge and tools she might need before birthing, (been giving her my handouts, a new Womanly Art, a couple of video's) and then she says she hadn't even looked at any of it yet. I gave it to her in MARCH! Guess we can't do it for them. Guest guest
I teach my moms in my prenatal breastfeeding class how to hand express using a cloth breast and suggest they watch the Stanford University Medical Center web page video on hand expression to practice. It not only proves to them they actually have food for their baby but they can also learn this skill that can fix so many issues with breastfeeding! They feel more confident when they master this. I believe it was Jack Newman that said at a conference once that in Canada they have moms hand express after 36 weeks if they are gestational diabetics to start collecting colostrum to use in cases of hypoglycemia for supplementation. Since they do not pull or squeeze the nipple to express it isn't nipple stimulation and doesn't induce contractions or cause PTL. We did have one teen mom that got a little excited about hand expressing and brought in about 4 oz worth when she came to the hospital to deliver! It was impressive! I think every expectant mom should know how to express her own milk. Guest guest
I have had this happen to me many times too. Very frustrating, especially when we are putting so much time and effort in to helping them be successful, and it seems like they have not put much of it to use. We have to remember that we can give them all the best info and any assistance necessary, but it is ultimately what they do with it that will determine how successful or unsuccessful they will be.I think repetition is helpful to these Moms. Hopefully some of it will stick.
