Interesting concepts...the one I would like to comment on is control. I

need it. Without it I am stressed. That means I have to decide what I

can control, what is within my means to control, and then make every

attempt to do so . Like organization. I must be organized. And since

that is something I can still do I insist on it. I feel better. Now, a

clean house ? I would love it, but I can't do it, so that is not within

my area of control anymore and I had to let it go. Strange creatures

arent'we? Control is just a figment of our imagaination I think, but it

serves a purpose if it reduces stress.

Oh and I think for me living in a rural setting is definitely a stress

reducer. The city makes me hyper. But for some, it is the other way

around...Go figure!

I think each person needs to figuire out what they need in order to

reduce the stress, which will reduce the pain.

Organization???? Funny about my messy desk. People always joke about the

mess on my desk, I must have 100 things on it. But what amazes people if

they ask for something I either know where it is or that I don't have.

They occassionaly try " But I put in on your desk... " But then if item

#101 hits my desk I feel out of control and then I have to stop and

sort. I am so busy at work that they only time I really get to clean and

sort is when the computer is down.

,

I was almost going to offer some advice about how to manage your desk.

Then I looked at mine, piles everywhere. When it gets too cluttered, I move

the

piles to the top of a low bookcase nearby. I have always done things this way.

Occassionally I go through everything to see what I can get rid of.Interesting

tings turn up; plates, forks, etc.

If I've lost anything that might have been important, it isn't any

more

when I find it.

I think that those of us who have pain and all kinds of 'health challenges'

are much more aware of the issue of control than most folks. Before I

wacked up my spine I became fascinated with the ideas, illusions and facts

about control in our life but AFTER the pain started it all took on a new

meaning. When I started working on stress reduction as a tool for managing

the pain I became more aware of the role of stress and our health &

well-being. If I have some things hanging over my head to do that I can't

or haven't yet learned to say NO to, then I must do them or resolve them or

whatever if I'm to keep the stress level down and thus the pain level from

going up. Such a fine line to walk! Seems, for me, that I'm ALWAYS

redefining that line. In the past year I've really let go of a lot of the

organization I used to have. Sometimes it still drives me nuts but I also

am deriving a great deal of satisfaction that I can be quite happy and comfy

with some things being in a shambles now! This room I'm sitting in is the

messiest in the house, the messiest I've ever had in my life, and I realized

the other day it's also the most comfy space for me most of the time! Just

looking in here as I walk down the hall gives me a 'warm-fuzzy'. I think

it must be some sort of symbol to me that indeed I can be sloppy and even

like it! :-)

Ken,

You wrote about your desk management procedures: " If I've lost anything that

might have been important, it isn't any more when I find it. "

Question: Isn't important any longer, or isn't lost any longer?

Oh me tooo.....its wonderful , isn't it. I can be messy and have an

excuse now! I almost think I like it too much!. I sit here in my

superfabulousitisous lift chair that does everything but fly,

surrounding by my piles of everything necessary to life as I know it

now. 'TIs wonderful! Every thing an arms length away! Its a mess, but I

know where everything is. So in a sense I still exert control , it is

just over a much smaller area. LOL!

You paint a glorious picture!! :-) I have piles of stuff everywhere in

here and also around MY chair in the living room, plus by my side of the

bed. Devine!

Ya know, I feel that by giving up control and the illusion of control, we

actually GAIN more control.....and better than that, less stress.... than

we ever could (and maybe still CAN'T) imagine!
