Guest guest
, I think the test you are talking about is the Hemoglobin A1C, if so it is supposed to give the doctors an idea of the range of sugar that you have had in the last 3 months or so. It is supposed to be done after fasting. I personally feel that it is better to know what I have or almost have, so I can find ways to deal with it before it gets worse. My endocrinologist feels that I am pre-diabetic and wants me on a high protein-low carbohydrate diet. She feels that this might prevent me from becoming a full fledged diabetic or at least postpone it. She also has me checking my blood glucose at home 2-3 times a week and take the Hemoglobin A1C test twice a year. As far as your doctor not wanting to show you the results, that's plain bull. You have a legal right to know...after all it is your body and how can you make an informed decision regarding your treatment if you don't know the results. I always get copies of all my lab work. I tell them that I see so many different doctors (14 I think at last count!) that this is the only way I can keep them all informed about how I am doing. And I do in fact bring copies of the relevant tests to other doctors as I see the need. So far none of the doctors has ever given me a problem. My rheumy's staff is really good and will give me the latest labs before I even go in to see him, so I have a chance to study them in the waiting room. This way I can organize the questions I have to ask, if any. Take care of yourself as no one else will Ann K > > I know my sugar levels are high half the time I am checked, which isn't very > often. Guest guest
Hi , I haven't been in contact for awhile since I have been in remission with Stills for over 2 years. You were one of the first people to write me when I first found this group, and I was always touched by your personal warmness. I am a type 2 diabetic and currently on insulin. I too had gestational diabetes with my last pregnancy and I was always borderline when I went to the doctor for my checkups. My mother died when I was 10 and she was a diabetic and a heavy smoker. I knew that was prone to this disease and always had tests done but no doctor would do anything for it until 1991. I was put on diabeta, which was an oral pill. I was put on glucophage in 1996 and also kept taking the diabeta. I had gotten a blood glucose monitor but my doctor said that I didn't have to check it myself, and since he didn't give me a prescription for the strips, I would have to pay for them out of my own pocket, I just followed his instructions and got a blood test with fasting every 3 months. He never checked to see if there were any complications from the glucophage and after 2 years of taking it I started having blurry vision, and started aching all over my body. I thought that I had the flu, and when I started getting a 102 fever and than a rash and finally could not open my hands, I finally went back and had blood work done and my blood glucose was 457 and I was immediately put in the hospital. I was put on iv's and insulin shots and after 3 days a rheumaltogist diaganosed that I had Stills. I was put on 40mg of prednisone and after 2 days, my hands finally went back to normal. I was so happy to be able to open my hands and able to walk around, that I forgot about the diabetes and taking insulin shots. After 6 months of being on prednisone, my blood glucose would go from 350 to 50 the same day. I had gained over 60 pounds and since I had lymphedema in my left leg, it got bigger and I could not wear any of my old shoes, but my Stills went into remission. The prednisone helped it but made me have diabetic retinopathy and I had 11 laseks on my eyes and now my eyesight will never be the same. I'm sorry that I got carried away with my history, but I wanted to get you to understand not to rely on your doctor telling you that you don't need to know what your blood glucose is daily. Please listen to me because if only I had been watching more carefully and paid out of my own pocket for the strips I might have had better control of the diabetes. Just because you feel you have it under control one day, months later it will show up in your eyesight or circulation. I take insulin twice a day, and test my blood glucose 3 times a day. I have the test done every 3 months where I fast for 12 hours. It had been coming down but every day is a different challenge. I feel like I can never get this terrible disease under control no matter how much I try. I know you are still young and you can get this under control before it does any damage to your eyes or circulation. Talk to your doctor and if he won't do anything about it find out some one who will. I was always borderline, which was 200. The best blood glucose for a diabetic is between 80 and 140. You see how they let me go and I just figured they knew what was best for me.You know your body and if you feel that your blood glucose is too high. Get it checked and under control. Just because I had a reaction from the glucophage doesn't mean anyone else will, but get some kind of help. I am 54 and will never have good vision again and it will probably get worse. Please take care of yourself and let me know how you are doing. Carol in Wyoming
Guest guest
I have one of the most intense types of diabetes - if one can classify it this way. Everything affects it but not onions! I think a lot of ideas about diabetes are very misconstued. I have been writing about that a lot lately. I have type 1 diabetes which is very different to the usual adult onset type 2. Anyway, all an interesting teaching and learning experience. Not always fun though! But try to make it so. Guest guest
I have trouble with sweet potatoes also. I enjoy them on occasion, but they always turn me orange and give me symptoms of bone loss. I experience the same thing with yellow squash also. It's supposed to be a safe macro vegetable, but I don't tolerate it. I'm wondering if this is normal that a diabetic should be unable to eat the round and root vegetables that are so foundational to macro diet and spleen/stomach/pancreas health. How can a diabetic heal the pancreas and the blood sugar system without them? Nina Re: Diabetes the only veggie I find a real problem is sweet potato. I experience the same thing with yellow squash also. It's supposed to be a safe macro vegetable, but I don't tolerate it. I find small amounts are the key - sometimes combining it with something more pungent like a little ginger can help to digest it better or to have something sour and/or bitter at the same time - eg sauerkraut, leafy greens, dandelion tea etc. Or salty like miso or sea veg.... I'm wondering if this is normal that a diabetic person with diabetes?! should be unable to eat the round and root vegetables that are so foundational to macro diet and spleen/stomach/pancreas health. I think it depends on the person - some will be more yin and then will be doing better with these quite yang veggies and others are too yang and that is why they are attracted to yin etc. Squash has quite a contractive nature - just notice the tightening of the skin when you get it on your hands raw when cutting it up How can a diabetic heal the pancreas and the blood sugar system without them?' I like it best combined with something a little less sweet like daikon or turnip. Also with beans helps..... maybe more in soups, watered down or with something salty - like miso etc Ilanit Tof - Signature Ilanit Ms Ilanit Tof B.A. (Psychophysiology/Psychology) Advanced Diploma Healing with Wholefoods PhD Holistic Nutrition (candidate) Little Tree Oriental Healing Arts Helping you grow to new heights of wellbeing with Oriental Traditions and Modern Nutrition ilanit@... www.littletree.com.au

Guest guest
thank you so much anja. Can you tell us more about this - before and after 36? I had been researching this magical age for a while after reading that in a kushi book. there is very little understanding about the different TYPES of diabetes. It is not the same dis-ease at all. Not even some doctors get the distinction right and the different names don't help! there is juvenile onset, type one, insulin dependent diabetes mellitus. Though some people are getting this type later in life due to so many vaccines out now and antibiotics etc. There is usually a viral component and it is an autoimmune dis-ease then there is adult onset, type two diabetes. Or also known as non insulin dependent though many end up having to inject insulin. Now some kids are being diagnosed with this form as it also more dieatary related directly - linked to obesity or high intake of trans fats etc. I was diagnosed at age 8.5. I am now 28. tell us more about this doctor. Where is he? there is also gestational diabetes which arises during pregnancy and is an indication that the woman may later develop type 2 - but not necessarily. Diabates insipidus is not related to sugar metabolism problems but share the name as it shares the symptom of copious urinary output but for different reasons - not because sugar is spilling into the urine but because of a pituitary hormone problem and problems with aldosterone - I believe that is the hormone involved. One dr confused this with a type of diabetes mellitus in an article I recently read! Anja Tumert wrote: Hello, When was you diagnosed with diabetes - before or after the age of 36? Guest guest
and give me symptoms of bone loss. what do you experience? how can you tie it to that? My nails start to tear and chip, about 36 hours after eating whatever it is. The body discharges excess minerals through the fingernails. If it needs every spare bit for the bones, there won't be enough left to keep the fingernails strong and shining. A strong mineral content in the fingernails will mean that the light bounces right off of them, creating that shine. Good-quality hair is another way to notice, but the fingernail test I think is the easiest one to apply. It's not foolproof - this year I had bone loss despite good fingernails. But most years, it's been a highly reliable indicator. Nina

He will be able to explain so much better... Shortly I can say about the age that there is an hormonal change then. The doctor (Jerome) says it is possible to get rid of the diasease when diagnosed after the 36th year but, also that it may be possible to get better if diagnosed before. I guess then it will depend on the constitution or something. Right now Jerome is in Spain. In June he will be going to Seattle, WA. Guest guest
that is really really interesting.hmmm Have you done any research into the role of silica? It is very important - even more so thant calcium - the whole biological transmutation thing Vegesil made by flora is the only one that uses Prof Kervan - who wrote Biological Transmutation and was a contemporary of Ohsawa's etc - fomrula - an aqueus extract of spring horsetail in vegiee caps. Of course there is silica in whole grains, parsnips etc My nails grow really fast and my hair too....so maybe that urine test about no calcium loss was right on?! But still reduced bone density..... nice to have this sharing of info! Nina Moliver wrote: and give me symptoms of bone loss. what do you experience? how can you tie it to that? Guest guest
Yes, I've taken silica supplements, but as you say, I think there is enough silica in my diet. I didn't notice any difference with the silica. Is your bone density just "reduced", or are you losing bone from year to year? Light bones, in and of themselves, are not a problem. Guest guest
I asked about diabetic people getting well after eating MB because I have a friend who wants to get in touch with such person in order to get "proof" before starting MB herself. Guest guest
AnJA, See if you can find the book The Macrobiotic Way, by Michio Kushi, p. 110-111, Beating Diabetes, Larry Bogoslaw's story - he was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes when he was 8 years old, 1972, and through his father found mb, started in June 1983, went to Marc Cauwenberghe in Boston, went from taking 65 units of insulin daily to 15 at the time of the writing, (he said it was a year) . But much much more wonderful effects from practising mb - if you can't find the book, I'll cc it for you. I'm guessing if you can find a counselor who has helped someone with diabetes, that would be a great influence. also guessing there are stories on line, but I just don't have time now to go searching - check out links in different mb sites if you have the time. Guest guest
I don't think there is any proof anything in this world that way. I read somewhere recently that people who want the proof of the miracle need to put their faith in God/Universe etc but they are ofthen the ones who want the proof first - I am not explaining it right but I hope you know what I mean. I would also like to hear of anyone with diabetes who turned it around....what does Jerome say? Guest guest
Actually his mother got rid of her diabetes after Jerome came to Seattle to take care of her. It's just that she has alzheimer, as well, and it is no good for my friend to talk to her. But, Jerome said he'll ask his mother's doctor if she will be willing to talk to my friend.
