Stop dieting - I lost 2 and a half stone when I finally did. Dieting not only turns down your metabolism but makes you obsess about food, so there is a tendency to binge and consume more (invariably carbohydrates) overall. I presume you have ruled out hypothyroidism and insulin-resistance in your patient? all the best, Krystyna >Robyn >herbalist@... > >List Owner > > > >Graham White, MNIMH > >
Guest guest
on 2/12/02 6:06 pm, Robyn at herbalist@... wrote: OK, I know this is tough, but what do you say to those patients who really cannot restrict their diet any further and are unable to exercise, yet must lose weight? We must all have patients like this, and the glib answer of " Eat less, do more " is often unrealistic. Are there any supplements or anything that anyone has found at all useful? Anecdotal accounts very welcome! One patient is asking me about HGH - a version of growth hormone apparently - my reflex response is to steer well clear, but I have nothing else to offer her, she cannot change her diet or exercise, and she really could do with losing weight! Does anyone know anything about this one? Robyn herbalist@... Several thoughts on this one Robyn; are they eating cos they're depressed?, (dieting can lower serotonin levels and add to the dieting vicious circle thing); have you tried Guggul?, I thought this one sounded promising, there is an informative posting from Stuart in the archives. I've just bought some but haven't tried it yet Anecdotally I had good success with one very large patient, we worked through numerous problems, most distressing first, starting with thrombophlebitis, then flooding, then work related exhaustion and depression (night shifts in an overstretched residential home), and finally focussed purely on the weight, having given lifestyle and dietary advice at onset of treatment. Nothing seemed to happen for a long time, but then something must have tipped the balance, she started taking the dog for long walks, got loads more energy and the weight just dropped off. (She still has a very full life, demanding job, large family, low wages, so it can't be easy to fit the exercise in, but she no longer gets depressed and was below her target weight last time I saw her). I think her story reinforces my hope that the herbs tend eventually to help people reach a point where they can see a way to change their life style to one that suits their health. Guest guest
Hi Robyn After efforting with raw food/increased exercise regimes for the many significantly overweight, which frankly achieved very little, I've devised a simple eat/breathe/move advice sheet based upon the high volume, low fat diet created by Powter. This has proved much more helpful - as one lady put it she can eat real food in real quantities rather than toy with a lettuce leaf and diet dressing... I've included suggestions such as slow down, chew more, eat when relaxed etc etc (contact me off-list if you would like a copy). For those who find even this too like hard work, Solgar Ref Manual Encyclopaedia of amino acids lists 2 with potential application to weight control: Acetyl L-carnitine (ALC) (contraindicated in pregnancy/breastfeeding) and L-Carnitine (no contraindications noted); both the above also list enhanced aerobic endurance to exercise. Hope you and the family are fine, look forward to catching up with you in Glasgow Best wishes Florabel
Guest guest
Dear Robyn, Purely anecdotal... Water is really great (drinking it cold is more tricky this time of year) often the 'pangs' of hunger are confused with the thirst reflex, which in our society of diuretic abusers is somewhat confused in most people! Encouraging patients to drink water (or herb tea) when they feel 'hungry' and then see if they still are is often worth a shot... Alternative- could try looking at types of food- have you heard of the 'Eat right for your type' book, it focuses on diet from an evolutionary point of veiw relating to blood types, e.g when each type evolved and what the people of the time were eating. Worth a try if all else isn't working. Good Luck, Hannah Barton .
Guest guest
I lost 15 pounds so far, and since August 29, which is when I found out that my liver disease progressed to stage 3 - 4, grade 2, with mild cirrhosis. I lost my appetitie. I gave up my morning pastry and my afternoon chocolate. Colleen Bob Aragon wrote: Between July 06 and Dec. 06, I lost 100 lbs. I would not recommend my method to anyone. My hair started falling out, and still is to this day. I basically could not eat because of pain and nausea. Since I went on pain management, I have a good appetite and love eating, but I now eat a pretty heart healthy diet. I have stabilized, but my hepatologist has told me that a liver transplant at this weight would be impossible. I am 5 10 and a half, and weigh 250. I'm fairly sure that this is not what you had in mind, but what can I say. I love to chime in. :-) Weight Loss Many have posted about the battle to lose weight to help their liver heal and I've read where some have lost 30 pounds plus. I was just curious, since that's a significant amount of weight, how long did it take, and what did you do to lose it? Was it hard? Easy, because you were motivated? Does anyone have any stories they would like to share? The reason why I ask, is because I think weight and diet have play a big role in the functions of the liver and there may be members who are suffering from Fatty Liver or NASH that might benefit from others experiences at losing weight or improving their diet. Guest guest
Colleen, I'm so sorry you have lost your appetite. I don't know if the weight loss is good or bad, but either " good for you, dear, or ooooh, bummer. " Whichever is appropriate. I hope you can find some kind of solace. I have adopted many things that bring me joy, even though my past enjoyments have all become so impossible right now. I love to blog, and in doing so, get to vent, or relate interesting things, keep people up to date about what I'm going through, without having it be talked about all the time. I have become a coffee drinker, and have yet to find any negative things about it regarding cirrhosis, so I am now a Starbucks connoisseur. Guest guest
The weight loss is a very good thing. Doc said losing weight would definitely help the fatty liver to disipate. Overweight people don't seem to do as well on treatment for hepatitis C. I'm a Diet Coke connoisseur. I probably ought to switch to apple juice. Guest guest
I was so scared by my abuse of alcohol, and what it can do, that I swore off of diet pop, and I LOVED diet pepsi. The flavor of sugar always grossed me out .But diet with aspartame converts to ethanol over time, and definately during digestion, so I switched to only Hanson's diet rootbeer which uses natural flavor and splenda. There are many negative things about splenda, but not from what I consider mainstream sources, just fringe sources. Re: Weight Loss The weight loss is a very good thing. Guest guest
Apple Juice in moderation would be ok but remember that fruit juices are full of sugar and calories. Probably more than what's in a diet coke. MsTigerHawk wrote: The weight loss is a very good thing. Doc said losing weight would definitely help the fatty liver to disipate.
