If you are looking at citricidal as a 'natural' preservative look no

further. It is not!! If you are looking for a preservative then look at the

conventional ingredients.

citricidal/grapefruit

Anyone familiar with the properties of Citricidal? Is it really the

broad spectrum antibiotic claimed by the manufacturer? If so, is it

effective mixed with soap? (I make my soap in a crockpot, would

probably add this to a remelted, already cooked batch. Temp runs

around 155F according to a candy thermometer.)

I'm not looking for preservatives, natural or otherwise.

no. it's utter nonsense. check the archives, please, there are

several posts discussing this topic.

WHY would you want to add this to soap, anyway, out of curiosity?

Looking to create a new drug product? After all, if it was an

antibiotic and you added it to a cosmetic, it would DEFINITELY be

considered a drug...

I was looking for the wrong search string. As GSE in the files

section there are two of the three abstracts from medline which don't

mention brand names, and missing the third which doesn't support the

general consensus, probably why it was left out. But I was already

aware of those before I asked. There's a dismissal from on the

basis Maurice posted something on another list. I haven't read all of

the messages; most of the ones I did read mention the string " GSE " but

there's no discussion. Too many messages to plow through.

ly, I was hoping some fairly well informed person could say

" here's what we know " and perhaps I'd learn something, rather than be

told what my business is and what I do or don't need. Apparently the

primary purpose of this list is for smart people to shove their

opinions down the throats of idiots who can't think for themselves.

ACNE. FOR ME. Triclosan works, but...

Now that you have clearly explained your goals in trying to mitigate acne

vulgaris I would suggest several alternatives. It is true that antimicrobial

soaps have been used to treat acne but they have not been recognized as

being effective. The thoughts are that one cause of acne is P. ovale and

that either triclosan or tcc may be effective against this organism. The

problem is that no one has been able to prove definitively that either

chemical works reliably in the treatment of acne. Years ago, hexachlorophene

was used in the treatment of acne but this was later banned from general

use. This was the original ingredient in pHisohex.

The OTC review for acne preparations has determined that salicylic acid up

to 5% and benzoyl peroxide up to 10% are safe and effective. There are

several other actives mentioned in the monograph but these are the one used

today. BPO is a difficult to work with and is an explosion hazard too but

you can easily work with sal acid if you are looking for making your own

product. You can also use the combination of sulfur and resorcinol. This has

a distinctive malodor.

A dermatologist can prescribe both topical, Cleocin, and ingestible,

tetracycline, antibiotics for the treatment of acne or prescribe 13-cis,

retinoic acid, trade name Accutane. Of all the treatments available the last

is the most effective. With the exception of the topical and ingestible

antibiotics all will have a profound drying effect on your skin. A

noncomedogenic moisturizer should be used to help mitigate the dryness.

With this information you now can make an informed choice for your treatment

program.

Nobody on this list is a mind reader. If you don't let people know what your

intended purpose is for wanting to use the ingredient, you are going to get

answers that relate to what people have normally asked about in the past.
