Guest guest
Hi Carl, Your comments on the cement/wood floor was once again an education. We can always count on you for that. Thank you. I do have a question. Here where I live alot of people are going w/cement floors, over basements. Not slabs on ground. Often I have pictured my perfect " safe " home, and how I would build it. Not that it would ever happen. But, in this home I have put cement floors thru out, stained them and so forth. hehehehe What are your thoughts on cement floors? To me it just seems perfect. But, I'll bet you have a better picture or opinion of which I would be interested in hearing when you have time. I have been in some of the homes that have these. It just smells so fresh, clean. No carpet/lino scents. Just seems " safe. " Thank you,
Guest guest
Just curious , do you mean there would be a cement ceiling over basement instead of wood beams supporting a floor above basement? No second floor? > > Hi Carl, > Your comments on the cement/wood floor was once again an education. We can always count on you for that. Guest guest
Barb, Yes that is what I mean. My friends sister is actually almost done w/her home. She has done this. (I have not seen hers) No wood at all for the floors/ceilings. It is a beautiful technique, lots of different finishes. You can't even tell it is cement. You can make it look like marble, ceramic, anything you'd like. Guest guest
, Cement in the air can be much different than cement on the ground. The difference is one is in contact with moisture and the other one isn't. Cement flooring with a sealant or finish on top (so there isn't cement dust like with basement floors) can be great. Less water/moisture content, less organic material for food, more easily cleaned than carpet, etc. However, some individuals that are more chemically intolerant have problems with additives in cement, especially the vinyl plasticizers. Again, one size does not always fit all. But in general cement floors can be better for many. Guest guest
CARL--I dilly dallied on a house too long which had slab concrete foundation which had been sealed. It was the best house I ever found despite the carpet. Now I know why. So few have slabs in Richmond and even fewer are sealed. Jane Ann " Carl E. Guest guest
, was mold the reason she did this or for storm resistence or just liked the style of it. I have seen nothing like that here but have seen pictures of all concrete structures and also new concrete finishes recently. > > Barb, > Yes that is what I mean. Guest guest
She did it because it is in style over here, and it is beautiful also. If I ever got the chance to do it I would to. No carpet, not tile grout to clean, no wood to wax, cleans easily. [] Re:Carl/flooring , was mold the reason she did this or for storm resistence or just liked the style of it. Guest guest
I've seen some interesting wall designs. Have you seen her floor? Is it painted shiny solid color. I've seen that or does it have a design? > > She did it because it is in style over here, and it is beautiful also. If I ever got the chance to do it I would to. Guest guest
Barb, I have not seen hers. But yes they put designs in them. I have seen them look like marble, ceramic, imported stone, stained one color, alot of different things you can do to them. Also, something else that is very cool. They also do counters out of cement too. They can match your floor, or however you'd like them. You can finish them shiney, or matte. I have only seen shiney, and believe that is what I would pick. Guest guest
Has anyone here ever used a radiant heating system using the floor as a radiator or heat reservoir? You could collect the heat in a hydronic solar system and use the water to transfer it to the floor...when appropriate..
