Guest guest
Thanks for the warm welcome. I feel so supported already. You asked for a little personal history. So, here it is: I had never been vegan and felt I would never be. I had been vegetarian for a couple of years about 10 years ago. For the majority of my life I have had a diet that consisted of pounds of sugar, some meat products, loads of dairy, and very, very little whole grain. I am not visibly ill or hadn't received any negative medical diagnoses. But, woke up one morning and realized I was 'dying' quickly from the processed junk I was taking in. I am now committed to making significant changes to improve the quality of my life. It has been a 'piece of cake' and I am enjoying it. My challenge has only been with getting understanding and support from my family and friends. > Welcome Katrina to our group! > She said: > Comment from user: > I a very new 'mac' (two weeks). Guest guest
Wow, this is very wonderful and interesting. Have you gotten any cookbooks or taken any cooking lessons? Do you live in a community where many people seem to be interested in and practicing macrobiotics? Having a support network is really helpful. How does your family seem unsupportive? Is there anything specific? When people change, it can be a threat to others. It could mean any number of things to your friends and family... but for the most part, changes in someone close cause us to look deeply at ourselves too, and that is not always comfortable. We tend to stick to our familiar patterns and routines, because we find safety and comfort in them, even when they are not healthy for us. Three cheers to you for breaking out of the mold. At least with my family, they didnt really know what to think about my macrobiotic diet either, and raised the extreme eyebrow when I layered my vegetables just so... I was always the one in the meat- and-potatoes-country-raised family to be outside the margins with fashion, opinions, and diet. However, they quickly identified the changes in my health, weight, general well-being, and outlook on life, and were curious to try all the food. As my cooking skills got better, they liked the food more and more. when I am home, I cook for everyone. They especially love grain porridge, blanched veges, and miso soup for breakfast. Now at least one other sister of mine works pretty hard to incorporate macrobiotic food into her daily life, and she's had some major accomplishments and changes happen. It's beautiful to see! Hopefully, your family will quickly recognize the changes in you too. My teacher gave me this wonderful way of looking at my own situation. I'm here striving to bring macrobiotics to Honolulu, or perhaps to revitalize it and raise people's awareness of the ideas in their current manifestation as I understand them. If I encounter obstacles, he always reassures me that it will be OK. Sometimes we encounter head winds, but headwinds can quickly change to tail winds to lift us up and carry us! My goal is to take care of myself first, as best I can. Have a beautiful day. Aloha, > > Welcome Katrina to our group! > > She said: > > Comment from user: > > I a very new 'mac' (two weeks). Guest guest
Katrina, I don't know if it's the lack of sleep or what but your intro of yourself and why you've come here gave me chills. You said it beautifully. I'm so very happy to have you here. I wish more of the population would realize what you have. I think as far as your friends and family understanding it's so difficult to accept those and not try to get them to accept your lifestyle changes you really have to, to a point. I happen to have a big mouth (no comments from the peanut gallery please) and say stuff to ppl about diet but more from an ethical and vegan standpoint usually. Sometimes I'll do the health thing too. Most ppl don't care, they want a quick fix and rush the microwave. I think you may lose some friends, I know I did, they thought I became too regimented and to difficult to deal with (hey, I was difficult before too what gives?) but you'll be surprised some may even come around (in time) and ask you questions and seek your guidance. Gotta motor for the day but please keep your comments coming. Thanks for your input!
