Hi, sorry to be a downer, but I told my in-laws that I was having the surgery done on 19 June 2006. What a mistake, I had spent the next five hours being lectured to about trying harder and developing moral fibre, together with will power.

It is such a lonely place to be when everybody around you thinks you are just a pathetic fat person who can't learn to say no to food.

When will I ever learn to keep my my shut.

Anway, i hope everybody else had a nice day off.

Oh Libby

I know exactly what you are going through! My family have said the same to me. The only true supporter I have is my husband. My siblings (who are all thin but they all smoke like chimneys) think that I am "taking the easy way out" and that I should join Weight Watchers. Well, I have been a member of WW about 4 times now and the most weight I have lost is 9kg! I think making that decision to be banded is extremely courageous and a real step in the right direction, don't ever let anyone think you are pathetic - cause it just ain't true!

I think what we have to remember is that noone knows what is like to be us, unless of course they have the same circumstances. So I say, don't worry about your in-laws, they will be eating their words when you are fit and fabulous!

Take care and I hope you are feeling a little better :-)

Hi Libby

I am sorry you have had this reaction - sorry - but not surprised.

To tell - or not to tell - is something that often comes up for

discussion and it's a really personal decision. Some tell everyone

and are happy with that decision, others tell only their nearest and

dearest and still it can backfire.

I think I remember Mel recommending the Dr Fielding article.

Why not post your in-laws a copy so at least they have some

understanding. My in-laws still don't know, although the old girl

quizzes me everytime we visit!

My hubby supported my decision to have the surgery 3 years ago,

although left to him he wouldn't have chose that path for me but was

keen for me to regain my health and life. Just recently I was re-

banded and was peeved that I had to go through the surgery again. I

toyed with the idea of having the band removed (and not replaced).

Guess who was the band's biggest advocate? I did admit to him that

I wouldn't last on this eating regime without the band for 5

minutes. His response - would you last 5 minutes? LOL

As if this decision isn't hard enough already without being judged

by those close to us. In the end Libby it is your decision - if you

are confident it is right for you then proceed with your head held

high (although us fatties aren't usually good at that!).

Are you the girl from Gordon? Did you and Mel catch up for coffee?

I too live closeby and would be happy to catch up with you.

Take care,

Lorraine
