Hi Charlotte,

I don't have asthma, never had, probably never will, but I'm the one who calls the ambulance when my man can't breath. I'm the one who insists he be taken NOW when the doctor tries to keep us waiting. I'm the one who wants to go home from functions where people are smoking.

He's 6"2, never sick, hates illness of any kind (his that is). I'm 5" nothing and I'm the one who gets angry when people don't take this seriously. It's damn scary to see someone fighting for breath and there is so little I can do.

It's also frustrating to get such contradictory advice from the medical professionals, but thankfully after 4 scares in the last 2 years that lead to hospitalization we have gained enough information to manage in a sensible way.

On a better note, although had asthma threatening for the last 10 years, it's only been in the last two that it has flattened him. Meaning he has been unable to work for months at a time. He is always stricken through our winter (We're in NZ). This year, not a sign of it. His daughter who has also had it very badly since she was a child has not had any sign for the last 5 years. So there is hope for all sufferers.

The changes we made......We eat better food than we ever have. A lot is home grown, fresh and organic. I don't buy any prepared or convenience foods with strange additives I don't recognise. We drink fresh squeezed fruit juices........ you know, the whole, "lets eat healthy deal".

I believe asthma is an immune system problem and most of our immune system is in our digestive system. Healthy digestive system = strong immune system = resistance to asthma. Maybe my theory is wrong, but I see this asthma's season for , has been different. He has been so careless about exposure to cigarette smoke (when I'm not around). He's even had a big burn up of rubbish on the farm, and both times his reaction, although it's been there, has been there and gone without any lingering effects.

I too have had people suggest it's just a mind game is playing. Gives me little respect for their opinion. The sensible person is the one who listens to thier body.

Regards

Not as much lately since people appear to be more educated, at least those around me. I've been clinically dead 3 times, so it is very serious for me. But 17 years ago when they were trying to diagnose me for positive, they occasiona

But I'd like to see those people try to breath through a straw while I hold it closed!!! See if they think it is in the head then. (devilish of me, i

I agree with you wholeheartedly. If you could make others experience what we feel for just a day what a world of acceptance it would be. I am constantly up against friends and family who dont understand and think I am just dwelling on it. But how do you not when some days all you can think about is the struggle to take that next breath? I cant count how many times I've seen a paired of eyes rolling at me when I mention the word asthma. At least with groups like this I can at least reduce my stress level by chatting with those who care and understand

This group is very friendly and I'm happy to see some more people coming out of lurking and joining the fun. I'm on lots during the week, my computer is my outlet some days when the weather demands a slow pace. But I've learned that I can accomplish almost as much in my own way as others do in their fast paced -rat-race-world.

Learning to accept and find the friendships/support we need is one BIG help.

Sometimes I think someone has to actually watch a person having an attack

to change their minds about what's happening. I don't think my son (age

13) really took it seriously till he saw me having an attack. He was

afraid to let me out of his sight for awhile after that. Eve

Unfortunately,

there are a number of diseases that are psychosomatic (just in people’s heads).

It takes therapy and a lot of work to cure them.

Asthma-like

symptoms can be psychomatically generated, that doesn’t mean that all asthma is

‘in our heads’.

Many illness can be " in your head " . Unfortunately stress and worry, " in your

head stuff " can actually cause chemical reactions in your body that make you

physically ill. What you think and your attitude can make you more, or less

unwell. Your body does not exist as a separate entity from your head and your

thoughts.

The frustration for asthmatic is that it is not a visible or dramatic illness

until you have a full on attack and I believe some unkind people try to tell

asthmatic that they are imagining their illness, when asthmatics need

understanding and support instead. I have yet to see an asthmatic IMAGINE they

are having an attack. Some people are just insensitive to other peoples

suffering. Thankfully we have a group like this that is supportive!!!

But asthma, like many other illnesses causes stress and stress can cause an

asthma attack. BUT stress is not where the asthma originated from.

Kind Regards
