EFNS CONGRESS: Eletriptan Provides Quick Migraine Relief, Study Finds

SEVILLE, SPAIN -- Sept. 22, 1998 -- Pfizer Inc.'s antimigraine compound

eletriptan, a potent 5-HT 1B/1D agonist, was shown to provide headache

relief during the first attack as quickly as 30 minutes after first

dosing, according to a study presented at the third congress of the

European Federation of Neurological Sciences.

Dawson, the director of Kings Headache Service, Kings College

Hospital, London, England, reported that eight percent and 11 percent of

patients studied receiving eletriptan at 40 mg and 80 mg respectively

reported relief at 30 minutes post-dosing as compared to only three

percent in the placebo group. At one hour, the difference was even more

dramatic, with 33 percent of both groups reporting relief as compared to

nine percent of the placebo group.

Within two hours of treatment, 62 percent and 65 percent of patients on

eletriptan 40 mg and 80 mg respectively said they experienced mild or no

pain compared to 19 percent in the placebo group.

The double-blind, placebo-controlled study randomised 1,153 outpatients

in parallel groups who met the International Headache Society's criteria

for migraine. The study was designed to confirm the efficacy,

tolerability and safety of eletriptan 40 mg and 80 mg versus placebo.

Adverse events reported included astenia, dizziness, somnolence,

paresthesia and chest symptoms.
