During the three years that I scrounged and begged for thyroid pills from anyone that was switching doses and didn't need their old tabs anymore I seriously considered going up to a cop someplace and kicking him in the crotch so that I could go to jail and get medicine.

People were so kind... One guy sent me the 8 pills that he had left in a bottle because he'd just gotten a new bottle..... A gal from England that sent me 28 pills.... just so many folks that helped me out when I couldn't get anything.... I don't think I would have made it if not for them... I really don't....

Thank goodness, now, for all the companies that are able to sell us meds without prescriptions... they are saving not only lives but improving the quality of lives for many, many, many people all over the world.

I think that you may find the smaller more frequent doses make you feel more even during the day. It made a world of difference for me....

Keep us posted on how it works for you... be interesting to hear - we arent' all the same..

Another way to get to the doctors is to give them copies of the

information that we have obtained.

My doctor has been presented with two books on Thyroid. Living Well

With Hypothyroidism by Shomon, and Thyroid for Dummies by Alan

Rubin, MD. Both times he asked me why I was giving him the book and

both times I told him that I wanted him to be as up-to-speed on all of

this as I was going to be. He has been recommending them to his

other thyroid patients.

Hi ,

The way for that to happen is for writers to get out there and write about

it! The BIG problem is, though, to get those writings published. There

are lots of books out there about the thyroid problem, but the only people

who read them are the ones like us who know we have a problem. I doubt if

doctors read them.....That First magazine article was a start, but wasn't

anyting really new as far as I'm concerned, and once again, doctors aren't

going to read that stuff.

Groups like this work pretty well, but other than renting billboards and

putting up signs, how do you get information to the public? Through

magazines, newspapers, books....

I'll happily take it... I'll seal it up and then I'll have it for emergencies.... I like Naturals a whole lot more.. but synthetics are way better than going without again. I learned the hard was just how quickly things in life can change. I had a really great job as a money courier for an international corp and got called into the managers office just before a staff meeting and was told I didn't have a job anymore. He was telling me then because the staff meeting had been called that day to announce the lost of 8 contracts effective the following day and they wouldn't be able to keep me. ... that sucked big time!

I'll contact you off list... Thanks!

Hi, Topper,

The

greatest " tool " any of us can use with doctors or any other

professional provider of services is our consumerism.

There was

a time when doctors became doctors because they truly wanted to help

people. Those days are not totally gone, as some of us have doctors

who care. Nevertheless, if the doctor I am seeing is not going to

listen to me, then I am not going to pay for her/his services, nor will

he/she see me more than once. What is the point? The doctor

is not living with me 24/7 and has no idea what my life is like until I

say what my life is like. A broken bone is often noticeable, but a

" broken " Thyroid?

The

medical schools are partly to blame for shifting reliance on symptomatic

diagnostics to technological diagnostics. They are playing the

" black and white " game and the patients are still saying,

" It hurts here in my knee. Why are you x-raying my left

shoulder? " I have refused tests that made no sense to

me. I would do so again. " Your insurance will pay for

it, so what's the difference " is baloney.

These

so-called professionals are still so ticked off about the supposedly

" lower " reimbursement levels that they have switched to a

mass-production routine in handling their patients. Is the

reimbursement lower or is it that the insurers, whether Medicare or

other, have gotten fed up with being billed for services not rendered and

unnecessary testing?

I have a

wonderful insurance situation. I am covered under my husband's

employer-provided plan. I am disabled and covered under Medicare A

& B, and my husband status as military retired gives us both coverage

under what is now called TriCare " standard " . My

deductibles are nominal. My " cost share " can be enormous

with the primary, but they have also gotten smart and will state on the

Explanation of Benefits that I receive, " Not medically

necessary " and the charges are left unpaid by the carriers and a

statement appears stating that I should not pay those charges when billed

by the provider's office. I don't pay what the carriers state I

should not pay. I have had the office manager confront me in one

provider's office to tell me that I had to pay my outstanding balance or

not be seen. I simply tell this person, as calmly as I can after

being threatened this way, that I will not do anything illegal and paying

charges that were dismissed by my carriers as being " medically

unnecessary " and that she or he had better go back and look at all

of the EOBs before ever confronting me again. I win. When I

see the doctor in that same office (I do keep the appointment), I tell

him or her what happened and ask when he or she is going to hire some

competent help. I have even offered to audit their billing system

to find out where the waste is.

To cut

costs to me and my carriers, I never allow the doctor's office to bill me

for my lab work. I ask that I be billed by the lab itself.

Most recently, I have had some awful problems with Sonora Quest of

Phoenix, AZ. Not only do they not bill insurance automatically half

of the time, they do not honor their " Preferred Provider "

contract with my primary carrier. They sent an account of mine to

collection for non-payment. I countered with " Unless you are

prepared to defend your breach of contract and non-compliance with the

law of the land in court, I suggest that you remove the account from the

collection agent and get busy billing the charges as you were instructed

to do in the letter you received from me more than four months ago.

That letter was followed by two phone calls and another letter two months

ago. " Needless to say, the charges were billed correctly to

the primary, secondary, and tertiary carriers in record time.

Payment was received from the carriers in record time as well. That

is the other part of why medical expenses run so high.

This grows

very long, so I will close. Greed and inefficiency are the two

greatest factors in the rising cost of health care, in my NOSHO.

Dianne

So far I am really happy with the Armour, but, I agree that any med is better than no med. I couldn't even open a jar of eye cream from the pain before the Synthroid. It went away within 3 weeks. I thought I had such severe arthritis, but is was the thyroid! This was just all over a year ago for me, so I remember well!
