That's not a bad idea, Mike

I guess that I'll bat second:

I am 39, married with one daughter and one grandson.

I graduated High School in 1977 and then joined the US Army for 4 years

as an infantryman.

After my service stay, in which I saw Georgia, South Carolina, Florida,

Germany and New Jersey, I met and married my wife. My daugher came

shortly thereafter. This past June, I became a grandpa at the age of 39.

My grandson is beautiful.

My hobbies are building scale military & civilian aircraft, collecting

aviation photos, American history, surfing the web, listening to

classical music & sketching.

In 1992, I had an accident in which I herniated four discs in my lower

back. I will never forget this as long as I live. I had surgery in 1993,

felt better for a while, then everything came back on me in triplicate.

I have a radiating pain (sciatica) in my legs, arthritis, scar tissue

and bone fragments in my lower back which have caused nerve damage and

it is almost impossible for me to move at times because of the physical

anguish in my legs, back and feet. It is becoming more and more

difficult to walk every day. The floor is the most comfortable place for

me.

The depression which accompanies this pain is another story.

Now recently, I have been told that another disc is herniated and that I

may have to go to s Hopkins in Baltimore to see a spinal specialist.

Next week, I will see a spinal specialist in town were he will explain

" more options " , one of which includes a catheter drip to my spine.

I was very active before I was injured. I played football, baseball,

worked out and was pretty much never still. I have gone from one end of

the spectrum to the other.

Now that I have made everyone feel 10 times worse than they need to

feel, I will let the next person have center stage...

A small comment if I may...

You talk about the other end of the spectrum. Here's what I think is close

to, but even then not quite, the other end of the spectrum for an active

person. One of my young neighbours, 19 years old, promising hockey player

gets pushed into the boards during a friendly game. Injures his neck and is

a quadriplegic. That's rough. So you see ? You're not even close yet !

Doesn't that feel better ? I certainly would take no joy in someone else's

pain but there are times when looking around you makes you wonder what all

the bitching is about. I do this to myself just about every day. I find it

helps me put things in perspective.

As for making us feel worse, you blew it again. Make us feel more sympathy,

yes. Worse ? No. On this list, we all share in our ups and downs, and

heaven knows there are some really mean downs. What we try to do is share

with each other the pain, and the joys we feel and in doing so perhaps

spread a little sunshine around.

Damn, you guys are turning me into a wuss with all this slurpy stuff. Can't

we just insult each other like civilized people ?

Yes, Mike, there's no question that there are people in the world worse

off than me...

Wow,

I guess I missed some of the commotion here. thanks, mike, for appending

's message. , I can see that you are miserable about your loss, and

rightly so. But losses are con stand in life, and we try to find ways to

make peace with them. I think you will find people here focusing on who &

what we are, not exactly what we did or used to do.

There are probably a million reasons why you could lose your ability to

take part in competitive sports. You could have been born black in the

south at the wrong time. But from what you say, you seem to have medical

care that is at least able to produce options for you now & in the future.

You can get on with the rest of your life. With limitations, but who really

has no limitations, but us when we're adolescents who can do everything.

And better.

For me, the very worst is people who have no hope. Not those of us who are

down just now about life's unfairness, but children in Chile with no

parents who have to stay hidden so the police don't shoot them to death,

but can't really do this because then they can't beg for food. Or members

of the lowest cast in India who are born & will die beggars (but I suspect

some of them make peace with their lives anyway.

If there is any message for here, it is that we humans have an

incredible gift for adaptability, and john, I am sure that all of us here

hope you will find how to tap into yours. Perhaps after some procedure to

diminish your pain & suffering, you will feel sufficiently renewed to see

more options in your life.

Yes, Ken, Pain does cloud our perception of things in general. When I am

in more pain than normal, I am extremely vulnerable and sensitive.

Here's praying will find some relief. Lyn
