Dear

re your patient with gross oedema. You don't give any background details,

but what's her weight like? I've recently had a patient with a similar

sounding problem, had it for years, history revealed that it began after she

lost a lot of weight. I worked on the principle that increased weight meant

more blood vessels, loss of weight didn't mean loss of extra vasculature,

and gave her lots of circulatory stimulants; worked a treat! I also put in

lymphatics; Galium in fairly hefty doses, and she is thrilled. I wouldn't

use anything too hot, because of her flushes, and watch the

contraindications with the kidneys, but maybe Zanthox, Ginkgo, Rosemary?

Lymphatics often work well where diuretics aren't having the desired effect.

Does she exercise? If not, or not able to, the naturopathic techniques of

skin brushing and hot/cold showers can do a lot to stimulate the

circulation, getting fluid moving through the body.

Hannah, glad to hear you're getting on well with H & B; I suspect it's just my

local manageress who's a bit tetchy; other comp. therapists have fallen foul

of her too.... I do have good links with two other local health food shops

though.

Caroline, was it you who asked about the mist tussis? I don't have that

particular recipe, but do have one for a mix called 'G.E's', which works

really well. As follows;

add to 800mls water; 6g each of hyssop, marrubium, Inula, Glycyrrhiza (I use

the juice sticks) Chondrus crispus; decoct to 500ml (about 20-30 mins),

strain, add 275g honey, stir well. Add 200 ml althaea syrup (see below).

Emulsify in 10ml Calendula tr, 1ml each of EOs Eucalyptus, Peppermint and

Thyme, add to mixture and stir well. Keep in fridge, take 5 to 10 mls 3 to 5

times a day. Works really well.

For 1 litre Althaea syrup, whisk 36g of Althaea rad powder in 500ml hot

water, stand for a while, add 500 ml vegetable glycerine, mix well. Keep in

fridge.

I add extras to this cough mix as appropriate; Potter's horehound and

aniseed or elderflower and peppermint go nicely in it.

Cheers

Alison
