Guest guest
I hear you! I have to tell you when I was pregnant with the twins the doctors were making all these plans for me to have an amnio.....Had to be done by a perinatologist because the doctors werent comfortable tapping twins, added risk etc. I went to the genetic counciler and the one I had told me that because of the mosaicism I either had a 1% chance of having another child with DS or what ever the chance was because of my age (25 at the time) with no added risk it would all depend on whether or not the egg that created Ariel started out abnormal and went normal or if the nondisjunction occurred after conception. I was so confused and upset. When I spoke to the senior doctor in my practice he took my hand, looked me in the eye and asked me did it mattered if the twins had DS. " No of course not I'd have them anyway" I told him. He said " then my dear you don't need an amnio tell them to leave those babies alone" I thank god for him every day..... Wishing all well Ariel8MDS
Guest guest
Even if amnios are accurate, what would that change? Other than the fact that your pregnancy would be sad and confused. Doctors need to quit insisting on amnio's! I think it is just because they enjoy this wonderful " science " that they have available and they can't wait to try it out on everyone. Kinda like a boy with a new video game, he can't get enough of it! Amnio's are also dangerous to the mother and baby. So, in my humble oppinion, amnio's should not be done. It wont change if your baby has a disorder or not, it will only change your attitude and disposition throughout the pregnancy, and many people wind up aborting their babies because they are not " perfect " ! just my two cents.... When I was pregnant w/ I knew I had an increased risk because of my age & my triple screen showed a 60% chance of delivering a baby w/ds. I did however have a very good OB/GYN. (a female btw) You could talk to her like she was your next door neighbor, very down to earth. She offered an amnio but I knew whatever the results were it wouldn't change a thing and I didn't want to the risks involved so I just said " no thanks " It was never mentioned again. I did however notice they had a post it note on the inside of my chart that said, " patient declined amnio. " I'm not sure what the purpose of that was. Guest guest
, Thank you for sharing that with us! I really think that doctors are begining to push the amnio issue. What a blessing your doctor was to tell you that when you needed it most! Guest guest
Hope, Yes, that does make you wonder. I really think that they do push the issue, and I have heard that doctors are required to recommend an abortion if your child has a disablity. I am not sure about this, but that is what I heard. I plan to ask around about that. Guest guest
That was not my experience. My amnio showed DS, and everyone was very clear what my options were and that they were up to me. No one pushed an abortion, but they did present me with the information. They were equally open about putting me in touch with families who have a child with DS. They were absolutely professional and supportive and even enthusiastic about my decision to keep my son and remained so throughout my ensuing pregnancy. I completely understand those who would not choose an amnio. But it helped us prepare, tell family and friends, meet other families, come to terms with the diagnosis, and be ready for nothing but a celebration when was born. I just wish, for families who choose an amnio (because we know many will continue to do so), that everyone could have the kind of support and seek the information I had and did; perhaps then more people would understand what a gift our kids are and would choose to keep their babies. Just my two cents. Beth Re: regarding prental testing results(amnio's) Hope,Yes, that does make you wonder. Guest guest
HERE HERE!! I was pretty sick of being nagged and cajoled for the entire pregnancy with Jonas about having these tests that I had to finally put my foot down and insist that the doctor write in my chart that I no longer wished to be nagged each time I entered their office about it and because I was nearly crying, he did so! I am so thankful that I DID NOT KNOW about the MDS, the heart problem, etc before Jonas was born. I am the type of person (not saying anyone else is) that would have imagined the absolute worst, and I never ever would have aborted the baby, I would have had one giant panic attack that lasted the rest of my pregnancy, and worst of all, I am pretty sure I would have begun to detach myself a bit in fear of what I was going to face. The way it turned out, I was able to fall in love with Jonas throughout the entire (7 month) pregnancy and I was also able to totally go head over heals when he was born before we found out a thing was wrong on his 10th day. Then I was able to spend one night crying until I feared I would burst a blood vessel in my head and then in the morning I had my perfect son back in my arms in the NICU and all the dread and fear and "feeling sorry for me, mostly" was gone forever! One other thing. I think the doctors (4) in the practice I went to were covering their own tails by pushing this. Every appointment started with them making me acknowledge that I had been told about all the tests which are available and had refused them, and then there was a special place in the chart they had to initial each time so they could prove that they had offered and I had refused. They would give me the lecture and the pep talk each time until I could never think of anything I wanted to tell them or ask them when I went there, all I could do was sit there and feel like a head of cattle they had just processed through their well oiled system! Guest guest
, Thanks for sharing that story! I love to hear of a doctor who is thinking with his heart not just his liability lawyer in hand at all times. What a caring doctor! Guest guest
Kristy, I can only think of one source for a requirement that all doctors recommend that you have an abortion if you have a child with a disability and it is very hot there indeed!
