Hi All

Once again I've just got round to dealing with the backlog of stuff, so if

you have tried to contact me and your problem hasn't been sorted please

contact me again.

Henriette Kress is now a moderator of this list, and as those of you who are

also on Henriette's [herb] list will already know, she is a lot stricter

than me - so watch out!

I'd just like to remind you all - please DO NOT SEND VIRUS WARNINGS TO THIS

LIST - doesn't matter if they are genuine or hoaxes don't send them here!!

LIST RULES

Remember that attachments are not permitted on this list, so if you receive

any message which has in the header and has an attachment,

then it is a virus so delete it immediately.

UKHERBAL-LIST

This e-mail list is for herbal medicine practitioners in Great Britain and

Europe (although others may be added at the discretion of the list owners)

to discuss any items of relevance to the practice of herbal medicine. The

list owners are Graham White (gcwhite@...) and Henriette Kress

(hetta@...).

This list is CLOSED i.e. only members can receive messages and access the

website, and only the list owners can add new members.

This list is UNMODERATED i.e. messages are not monitored or censored in any

way, so please stop and think whether your message is appropriate for the

list.

This list is not an official NIMH initiative, and is open to herbalists who

are members of any organisation or none.

To send a message to the list the address is:

ukherbal-list

(however the old address ukherbal-listegroups

will still work)

or click <reply> on any message with in the header

The messages of this list and other group information is found at

http://groups.yahoo.com/group/ukherbal-list

On your first visit to the website you will be required to register.

Members who joined prior to the Yahoo! take-over will need to reregister in

order to access the website. E-mail messages are unaffected.

REGISTERING

Go to http://groups.yahoo.com

You will be asked for a Yahoo ID and a password - these are YOUR personal ID

and password and nothing to do with the UK Herbal-list - so make a note as

you will be asked for them when logging on to the website.

Once registered click on 'My Groups' and the UK Herbal-list should be there

(along with any other Yahoo groups you may be a member of).

Please note it is not necessary to register in order to receive e-mail

messages, but you will need to register in order to visit the website.

LIST RULES

1. No spamming - i.e. unsolicited advertising

2. No personal abuse

3. No flame wars - where discussion between two individuals degenerates into

personal abuse, often dragging the rest of the list membership into the

fray - this is common on open, unmoderated lists.

4. No attachments (see below)

5. No chain letters of any type - doesn't matter if it's for a good cause

or not.

6. No e-mail petitions - ditto.

'NETIQUETTE'

Please follow these guidelines in order to make the list a more enjoyable

experience for all:

****1. Send messages as plain text only.****

If you don't know how to do this then contact me.

2. Add your full name and e-mail address (and preferably your general

location also) to the end of your messages. Virtually all e-mail software

has the facility to create a signature (or sig.) which will add these

details to your messages automatically.

3. Please edit your replies so that you only include the relevant parts of

any message you are replying to.

4. Please ensure that any message has an appropriate and informative header

in the 'Subject' line. If you change the subject when replying to a message

then change the header also.

5. When replying to a message please consider whether it should go to the

list or to the individual - see 'me toos'

'ME TOOS'

The following scenarios illustrate this:

Scenario One

Person A in message to list: " I have discovered the secret of universal

happiness, and it is watching EastEnders wearing a nappy full of cold

treacle " (Message OK)

Person B in message to list: " You are wrong, it is standing upside down

whilst having a capsicum enema " (Message OK)

Person C in message to list: " You are both nuts and should be locked up "

(Message OK but getting close to personal abuse).

Scenario Two

Person A in message to list: " I have discovered the secret of universal

happiness, e-mail me at bonkers@... if you would like a copy "

(Message OK)

Person B in message to list: " Yes please " (NOT OK)

Person C in message to list: " Me too " (DOUBLE ABSOLUTE NOT OK)

ATTACHMENTS/DOCUMENTS

Attachments are not permitted and will be removed from any message

containing one. If you have information that is too large to be sent as

plain text or contains graphics, e.g. a journal article, then this can be

placed in the Files section (previously called the Document Vault) on the

website and an announcement made to the list.

E-MAIL OPTIONS

1. Messages via e-mail. This is the default, i.e. what most of you are on.

2. Digest. The messages are sent as one big message, usually daily. It's

probably best to go on this if you are on lots of lists and only intend to

lurk (i.e. read messages without ever replying).

3. Web only. Messages are not sent to you, you have to go the web site

to read them. Change to this setting if you are going away and don't want a

full mailbox when you get back. On returning just change back to your

original setting.

4. Unsubscribe. You are completely removed from the list and will have to

contact myself or Anne Haldeos to join again.

To change your mail option:

1. Go to http://groups.yahoo.com/ (you may need to register if you have

not already done so)

2. Click on 'My Groups'

3. Chose the list you want to change, in this case ukherbal-list, and under

Delivery Options change things to your preferred option

4. Click 'save changes'

CONFIDENTIALITY

If discussing case histories or forwarding patient's e-mail please ensure

you have the patient's permission to do so and remove any information that

could possibly be used to identify said patient.

SECURITY

As said above this list is closed and should only be accessible to members,

however be aware that no system is foolproof and there is therefore a slight

possibility that messages could be seen by unauthorised people (and a high

probability that it is being monitored by government interception

computers).

Also be aware that what is posted to the list goes into the public domain

for ever!!

ADVERTISING

Advertising is permitted on this list, but only under the following

circumstances:

1. Discussion of a particular herb (or product) which may not be widely

available it is permitted to say 'I have that herb as Tr etc, contact me

off-list for prices etc.'

2. Following a request for a supplier by someone on the list it is permitted

to say 'I have that herb as Tr etc, contact me off-list for prices etc.'

It is also OK to recommend a particular supplier or company providing it is

made clear that you have no financial gain from doing so - the usual phrase

is 'no commercial interest' (nci) e.g. get your Papaver somniferum from the

Dodgy Herb Company (nci).

Offenders will be removed from the list.

THE NIMH

In general NIMH business should not be discussed on this list, however there

is a considerable amount of overlap on some issues between NIMH business and

things which affect non-NIMH herbalists e.g.. Dr. s; SSR; therefore I

will decide which issues can be discussed on this list on a case-by-case

basis. If you intend to make a public criticism of an individual Council

member, please have the courtesy to contact them directly, and await their

reply, before posting to the list.

SILLY E-MAIL ACRONYMS

You may come across some of these being used as shorthand:

FWIW - For what it's worth

AFAIK - As far as I know

INHO - In my humble opinion

IMNSHO - In my not so humble opinion

BTW - By the way

LOL - Lots of laughter

ROTFL - Rolls on the floor laughing

:-) Smile (happy)

;-) Wink

<G> Grin

:-( Sad

Cheers
