Dan, When Ardis was in the University hospital in late July 2006, her roommate

on the transplant floor was very ill from a liver resection due to liver cancer,

a sizable tumor. Her husband had to hire a nurse to come in ther and make sure

she didnt rip out her feeding tube. He was an employee at collier hospice center

in Wheat ridge Colo., west of Denver. He told me that he always did this because

the night shift could not be trusted. When Sharon had brain surgery last June, I

would arrive in the morning sometimes to find her in tears from being furious at

the night nurses. They were always having some kind of issue with prompt

administering of pain meds. This is an article I found last year.

Yes, I can really identify with what you've been through regarding

the medical community. Mistakes happen in any " business, " but in the

case of the medical community, it can mean life and death. As a

patient or an advocate, I learned you've got to be extremely watchful

of every move being made, which is why when my father was

hospitalized, I most often slept in a " geri chair " next to his bed.

Previously, I would be in his room from 7am to 9pm, but when I would

come in in the morning, I'd find they did things overnight that were

not correct. So the only way to be sure he received the proper care

was to sleep there. Due to my own exhaustion, I finally hired an

aide to be there at night. I remember thinking that there should be

patient advocate teams in hospitals just to be watchful of what is

transpiring with each individual patient, working along with the

nursing staff. I guess it would have to be operated as a non-profit

separate entity as hospitals probably can't afford to hire that kind

of extra staff.

Meanwhile, on a brighter note, I offer this meditation: " May our

lives be better and healthier from this moment on. "

Has anyone had a transplant in Portland Oregon? I have a friend whose dad just

got the call to head in he's next in line for a transplant. She was wondering

if I knew anyone who had been transplanted there, so I said I'd ask.
