Guest guest
I called the dr. this morning and of course she said go to the ER. Charlie agreed when she told him that. Go figure. Anyway we were there for a couple of hours-Charlie got tired of waiting and said he was going to leave. I told him that he needed to stay, etc. He said he would come back when he needed to-he didn't feel that bad. I told him when he felt bad it might be too late. I didn't win the argument. He left. I was so frustrated at the moment. I asked him if he was wanted to have any more medical treatment. His response-when it's worse. I don't know how much worse it has to be. I'm sorry to vent but I am worried, frustrated, irritated. I will just continue to keep an eye on him and worry. Thanks for your concern. Guest guest
I feel your frustration. I have been in this situation before. It would have been better to call 911. The reasons are these; sometimes but not always the patient will be seen sooner. Hospitals are hard pressed to not wheel a patient on an ambulance stretcher out into the waiting room. It can happen, as in a person who goes by ambulance for a stubbed toe (don't laugh, it really happens-I read a LOT of doctor and nurse blogs, and have a bunch of them linked on my blog) and the other reason is that your loved one will be so much more likely to not bail. Not to mention you will probably ask a family member or friend to pick you up after for a ride home. You might think this is bad advice, as it might not seem like a real true emergency, but I almost lost my daughter last year, and both of her trips to the ER could have been by ambulance, and things might have turned out differently. Paramedics have a protocol they follow. They will draw labs enrout, start an IV enrout, do vitals and see abnormalities enrout, and these things might take 6 to 12 hours if you are a walk-in. I in fact walked out after only 4 hours last summer. It turned out that if I had been more patient, and the ER took an xray, the air in my large intestinal lining causing the worsening of my symptoms would have been discovered. Instead, it took another 85 days before it was found, I was admited, and treated for it inpatient. I came close to losing my colon, and I would have lost the will to live. Living with a colonostomy bag would just about do it for me. I would have to go hit the bar, and put an end to all of this nonsense. So, sorry to ramble on. I hate the ER experience, so I can't blame your husband. I myself wouldn't go at this point either. Just some things for you to ponder. God be with you Nona. Love, bobby aka rwe. Guest guest
I'm sorry to hear that Nona. When you registered at the ER what reason did you give for your visit? Did you explain that he had cirrhosis and maybe possible bleeding varices? That should have put him at the top of the waiting list I would think. You're in my thoughts and prayers. Guest guest
I did tell all of that when we registered, when we went back and saw one nurse. They just looked at us. We live in a very judgmental part of the country and I think when you tell Charlie's diagnosis they don't hear anything else. My own family here has been the same way. Charlie did tell me this afternoon that he thinks it might be the varices but I can't get it through to him to do anything about it. His PA, who is wonderful, does always listen to what I have to say. I am going to call and talk with her. I think more can be accomplished that way than going through the ER. In the last few months, especially, I have seen him declining. Charlie told me last week he just doesn't have much energy anymore. I see his sleeping patterns change-cant sleep, then sleep for 9-10 hours. It's hard to watch him go through this. He has always handled this so much better than I have. He's a very strong individual but equally as stubborn an individual! Thanks for listening. Thoughts and prayers are always appreciated and needed. Guest guest
Nona, It is so difficult. I'm sorry. I hope the doctor can help Charlie get the varicies banded if that is the issue. Praying for your hubby and for you. Guest guest
Charlie will definitely get that checked out. He seems better today. I did tell him this morning that the next time he looks/acts like he did on Thursday night I will call 911 no matter what he says. Picture this-Charlie is 6 ft 5 in and I am 5 ft 1 in-so when I get bossy when him it's sometimes a comical sight. I'm had an endoscopy as well-the Dr woke me up in the middle due the some difficulties I was having. They didn't quite get me back to sleep when they were putting the tube back in-not a pleasant thing but it wasn't long before I was out. Guest guest
All you good folks hang in there. By this evening we are supposed to start getting hurricane force winds compliments Gustav. Generally, that means 2 weeks without electricity, or has every other time. I am battened down and on high ground well inland so I'll be fine. I'm getting my TIPS done next week I don't care if they have to do it by candlelight. I'm so big now everyone wants to tie stuff to me so it won't blow away. :-) CLE Y'all will be in my prayers.
