the radio report is based on today's Times front-page story blaming the

high incidence of ADRs - which, as Charlotte flagged yesterday, you can

read on www.bmj.com - on " likely " interactions with herbal medicines that

patients have not told their doctors about.

It's a disgracefully contrived story, which as far as I can see, has not

been covered by the other broadsheets, and before anyone asks, we are

working on a response letter.

If it's any help, Krystyna, when I was at medical school 30 years ago,

one of the first lectures pointed out to us the enormous proportion of

the overall death rate which was directly attributable to medical

intervention (Pharmaceutical and surgical), presumably to engender

caution. It was extremely hard to get hold of any herbal preparation

otc at all then.

I'm increasingly convinced that the Times is using us as a smoke

screen. When the other broadsheets had the disaster of Prozac for

youngsters on the front page, the Times was rejoicing in the imminence

of legislation to protect the general public from us.
