Last year about this time we posted information on Baldi, the

computer program model which was developed at the Center for Spoken

Language Understanding at the Oregon Health Sciences

University and the Tucker Maxon Oral School. The Vocabulary Tutor

uses the computer-animated language tutor Baldi, developed at the

Perceptual Science Laboratory, at the University of California, Santa

Cruz. The program features speech made visible through the an

animated 3D head model - Baldi.

" I am very excited to announce the release of the trial version of

the Baldi Vocabulary Tutor, as featured on ABC Primetime.

Baldi has been shown to be highly effective in teaching vocabulary

and language use to both deaf and autistic children. After many years

of hard work and dedication from our team of students and

researchers, we are all grateful to be able to apply our research and

technology to help children learn language.

In this trial, we are offering a vocabulary tutor and a package of

lessons for your children to work on improving language and

vocabulary. The lessons contain pictures, spoken and written language

to provide a multimedia learning experience. Most children are easily

engaged by Baldi, and participate actively in the learning of new

words and word usage. We will be adding lessons in the future, and

any suggestions for additional lessons are welcomed.

In the coming months, we will be offering the player with new

educational features, additional lessons, and an authoring tool so

you can create lessons of your own. These will be made available

through a company formed in partnership with Dan Feshbach, a father

of an autistic child.

Currently, the Vocabulary Tutor runs on only a PC, not a Mac.

Before you download the tutor we would be grateful if you would fill

out a short survey. We would appreciate any suggestions for software

features and new, or improved, lessons. We are always working to

make Baldi as helpful as possible. This survey will be a great help

for us to contact you in the future about ways that we can do just

that.

After you complete the survey, you will be given instructions on how

to download Baldi and the lessons, and how they should be used.

I hope Baldi is as helpful to your child or student as we have found
