<<My companion developed an enlarged parotid gland which has continueed

to grow. Initial biopsy was inconclusive. Cat scans were done which

show one other suspicious growth in his neck. He is scheduled for

surgery this Thursday to remove both. Does anyone havee experiencee

with this problem? The surgeon is of the opinion that the continuing

enlargemnt and pain warrant removal.>>

The parotid glands are triangular strutures located just in front of the ear and

above the

angle of the jaw. Composed of fat and the specialized tissues that make saliva,

they are

frequently enlarged in HIV disease, for multiple reasons

Removing the parotid glands is " doable,: but it is fairly complicated surgery.

The location

of the parotid glands is delicate, as the " facial nerve, " which makes the

muscles of the

face work, passes very near it. Damage to the nerve is a hazard of digging

around in that

area.

The other risk is " dry mouth, " if saliva can't be made in adequate amounts after

surgery.

It is not clear exactly what indication this surgery is for from your note. If

the parotid

enlargement is on one side, that would be an indication, for sure. If it is

for " cosmetic "

purposes, that's a matter of personal choice.

In my own case, I would not do this for simple enlargement. There could be

other

treatment options, especially radiation therapy. I am investigating this, and

will be

sharing my experience as I learn more.
