Mona & , That is so funny about the names for cats...it makes me wonder if I should reconsider liking them...maybe there's something deficient about me for not appreciating them. I do like big cats...like lions, etc. , I found myself in London alone in the early 90's...and got a ticket to "Cats." So I go alone...sit there...watch the first half...waiting for some kind of story to emerge rather than a parade of cats singing and dancing and prowling around the audience...Anyway, I left at intermission...lol. I had been to see Miss Saigon two nights before, and it just blew me away...there was just no comparison for me. Then, a few nights later I took in Maggie in "The Importance of Being Earnest" and that also was wonderful....I think there's something wrong with me not liking Lloyd Weber's, Cats...??? Beth the first time I saw cats was in New Orleans, and I was enchanted, but did consider it weird. The second time was in Mobile, Alabama a few years later, again a National Touring Cast, and probably close to as good as the first, but it was all I could do to stay... really bored. Same with Phantom of the Opera. Only good for one viewing per lifetime. On the other hand, I have seen The Importance of Being Ernest three times and enjoyed it each time, each interpretation a new experience,so guess I agree with you. Have not seen Miss Saigon... would love to. I have only seen Les Miserables once, but feel I could see it more than once. My daughter likes some of the music, but really did not like the live performance. I have this great 10th anniversary celebration from Albert Hall, where all the different Val Jeans from many diffferent countries come on stage singing "Do You Hear The People Sing" in their own language. I find it very moving. My daughter calls it "sappy" Lea Salonga who played Kim in Miss Saigon (I think, here in the states) was Epionine at Albert hall, and probably my favorite character. Come to think of it Becca gets her love of Broadway music from me, but her tastes are probably more sophisticated. I know the lyrics to everything, and have about a five note vocal range. I love to get quite by myself and sing away. Re: Pet Names @ Becki/Naming of Cats

Beth,

I love the musical " Cats " . I have never been

fortunate enough to see in on stage, only the video.

I have read " Old Possum's Book of Practical Cats " , by

T.S. Eliot. Most of the " Cats " songs are word for

word from that book.

Eliot did a wonderful job of catching the

characteristics and idiosyncrasies of cats. If you

don't know cats well, or understand what makes them

tick, I imagine that neither the book nor the musical

would be very meaningful. You may just have to be a

cat person to really like that play.

Mona

PS. I just want to make it clear that I am not just a

cat-person, but an animal-person in general. I do

like dogs, but I have never had one as a pet. I have

had fish, reptiles, amphibians, birds, crustaceans,

rodents and cats as pets.

Right now I have two pets, my cat Tuggie and a small

lizard named Genki. The rest of the zoo (the other

two cats, fish, tree frogs, and pet lobster) all went

with my daughter when she got married last year. We

also had a tortoise but he passed away last year.

,

I think our daughters could be related. I have always

loved musicals and started taking my daughter, ,

to them when she was quite small.

When was about 8, my brother gave her a copy of

TS Eliot's book and then took her to New York were

they saw " Cats " . sat in the third row on the

aisle and ended up with a cat in her lap at one point.

She was thrilled!

She also memorized much of the book. She recited " The

Naming of Cats " so much that I have most of it

memorized too! Every since then she has named our

cats after " Cats " characters. She wants to adopt an

old male cat from the humane society and name it Old

Deuteronomy. She says the name wouldn't be right for

a kitten; you can't have a young Old Deuteronomy. lol

is training to be a vet tech so I know she will

always have cats (and all sorts of other critters)

around her. And her husband is in theater, so she

will always have musicals.

Hey! I am a very warm friendly and comforting person! And a cat person! I like dogs but don't have one as they are too needy and it would not be fair to a dog as I am too busy to take proper care of one. A cat is needy also, but can be left alone for awhile...as long as they have food and water and an occasional brushing and petting they are happy. And if you have to be gone for a day or two they don't break their hearts like a dog would.

lol...ok I am done!

Mona, and Becca do sound so much alike, and sounds like a total sweetheart. Becca is a cat and horse person and I am a dog and horse person. Becca used to teach beginner riding lessons in exchange for her advanced lessons, and was on the intercollegiate riding team in college. We still have her horses, but one is leased to a younger girl and the other one my highschool age granddaughter rides. Becca majored in English and studio art in college, and now works with a landscaper. Go figure! Suits me, as it keeps her here, but eventually she hopes to get her masters at Cal Arts in Los Angeles and become an animator. Cannot bear to think of my little chickie so far away.

Cat Names: At present we have a Persian, Mirelle Infinity a 16 year old cast off from a family member when she became unhousebroken in her old age, , our own home grown 16 year old, Dora the Explorer, a bottle raised gray tabby/tuxedo, Tumbleweed and Brutus both black/tux brothers to Dora, so also bottle raised. Selena another family cast-off, solid black, Cockleburr a wide banded tabby/tux, feral but from the same mother as Dora, etc., Emma, tabby, feral, Tommy, tabby feral, and Cosette, tabby, semi-feral. The feral cats were trapped, innoculated and neutered then turned back out. We have porches, an outbuilding, raised that they go under and lots of trees and bushes, so they do fine outside in mild gulf coast Mississippi. They even did fine through Hurricane Katrina, although the mother of most of them seems not to have made it, at least we never see her now. One other, Golly Walley, a 20 pound bobtail cat/dog. Golly, Dora, and Finny (the persian) are house cats. The others live outside. Add to this three Labrador Retrievers, Two of which are mine and one Beccas. Becca's is well trained. Mine are well behaved when I insist. The oldest, Jeb, a yellow,is a rescue and my best friend. The two others Robin and Radar are blacks and were both purchased. We feed raccoons and possums, or rather they help themselves to the cat food at night, and have gotten so they pay no attention when we come to the door or window to watch. I expected to see a lot of waifs and strays after Katrina, but did not. Know there were many in other areas. When I start talking about animals, I do not know when to stop. W

The interesting thing to me is that cats have always seemed to me to appeal to the more cerebral, and dogs to those who need something to feel superior to or to take care of. No need to expect anything of a cat. As bright as you seem to be and as varied as your interests are, I would surely have pegged you a cat person. I, seem to need all that uncritical adoration you get from a dog, especially a Lab, something I feel a little ashamed of, but there it is. Cats seem to have the attitude we are there to serve them, even the feral ones. Emma will not let you get remotely close to her, yet she willl harang you from a distance if their pan is empty, with a voice laced with indignant wrath. Besides, with all that hay and feed, who does the mousing chores in your barns, or do you have a resident rat snake or two? I should send you Cosette. She looks like a very small mountain lion, with the small head and streamlined body and a neat efficiency of movement and innate, self sufficient dignity. She goes about her business and expects people to do the same. W

We do have rat snakes...but we also have LOTS of mice...and my husband would love to have a kitty. I just heard on the news that there were 87 cats rescued somewhere in Austin, and PAWS took them all in...they are all up for adoption. I do have lots of birds though...guineas, peacocks, chickens...and then the wild doves come here for feed...I would hate to see the cats kill the birds. That is another reason I hate cats...they are really putting a dent in the songbird population. I understand an animal eating what they kill...but killing for fun...hmm...I couldn't watch that. Beth, You went to see the Rolling Stones. They are absolutely amazing. What astonishes me is that they have fans from ages 16 until about age 70. I will try to see them this year in Germany, already saw their concerts in 2000 and in 1990. Generalities, yes, but I have to admit that they do describe even the cat lovers that I love. There was an article in sonian years ago about a large study in Great Britian on the effect of housecats on the songbird population. Turned out that the effect was huge. The main reason our is now a house cat is that she is a killing machine when it comes to birds. We had a pair of mockingbirds that nested in a live oak in our yard every year. would get every one of their fledgeling if allowed outside. It was as if they existed to give sport. If we could just train cats to kill mice but leave birds alone. I read that people claim they can train their cats, but I have never been able to teach a cat anything. But, you would love Golly. He does not chase anything, and seems convinced no one and nothing would harm him. All dogs are friends, and I think he would not fare well out in the world. The little girls next door have renamed him "Care Bear", and it suits him perfectly. So you can generalize about cat people more accurately than about cats, maybe. W.
