Guest guest
Gentian Violet that is available for purchase in the US is typically found in an alcohol solution and must be, in my experience, diluted in order to NOT get too much, or cause mouth ulcers. I rarely suggest use in the mouth of a baby, and on the nipples per Jack Newman. Now, unless he has changed his protocols then I offer this as a reasonable treatment with precautions. Moms are instructed to NOT use it full strength from the bottle, get their cotton swab wet with water and touch the applicator stick to the wet swab several times, then paint the nipples purple 2 times per day for up to 7 days MAX. When using it this way I have yet to have a mom or baby overdose or have any mouth ulcers. Sadly, Yeast is becoming more resistant and sometimes the GV does not work too well. I have also incorporated the use of Coconut Oil – but moms are reluctant to spend that much money on a jar of coconut oil. They are not used to using it, don’t know what else to use it for (even though I give them LOTS of ideas!) – and so don’t use it. In my area, moms will use Miconozole, Clotrimosol, Lotrimin, and Nystatin at the drop of a hat – but won’t use the most natural product…coconut oil. Go figure. Much of the toxicity, from my understanding, is due to over use, using too much or using straight out of the jar, and a long time ago I learned about a study done with Rats who were given astronomically high doses of GV and of course developed tumors and such. In order for us to develop tumors or such dire consequences from GV we’d have to drink sso many of those little bottles every day – and really – who would do that? Anyway, I know there is some disagreement about GV – but like many things, when used cautiously and properly, I and many others have found it to be a good treatment for thrush.
