Guest guest
No one in my family has ever had asthma before. I used to be a competetive swimmer, and I've always been proud of the fact that I dont and never have smoked. My mother smokes, and so did my husband. I have allergies to grass, mold and lint, as well as a few food allergies. My concern is timing, and environment. WE have lived in the same house for 3 years- smack in the middle of an active commercial orchard. I am concerned that the various sprays they use may have brought this on over time. I have also noticed that my rabbits(kept outside), started having repiratory problems this fall, and I " m not big on coincidences. This just seems like too much of one,a nd I'm very suspicious. If anyone can direct me to a website that might have information on anything like this, could you please let me know? Carol
Guest guest
Carol...you pose an interesting question. The environement could be a cause for your asthma. Why do people with no family history get cancer??? That happen to my mother and thank God, it was caught in time and she has been cancer-free for 9 years. I have come to the point, I have a disease and I have to learn how to take care of it and myself. To learn the triggers and warning signals. I wish you well with your search!!!!!! Guest guest
Allow me to share my input on this topic... I haven't thought *too* much about this regarding asthma. I don't think I've ever really wondered why I have it. My uncle had it but has grown out of it over the years and I do believe he is the only member of my [close] family to have it. You know, to tell you the truth, I don't really wonder about it because I guess I figure it's a waste of time trying to figure out where this asthma came from, because the fact is: it's here... lol. There are tons of diseases that people get and no one knows why because no one else in their family ever had it. It's really unfortunate that anyone gets any disease, but sadly, that's the way it is. Sorry if this is a little on the...negative side...but it's just what's coming to me right now. I'm tired LOL~ Anyway, basically what I believe is this: G-d gave us asthma and not other people in our families because he knew we would be the STRONG ones!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! With Love, Dara 15f w/asthma, esophagitis, and tons of allergies. want the list? haha

Guest guest
I believe that knowledge is power ; I have lived with this illness for my entire 36 years and am still constantly searching for new treatment options ( I am steroid resistant with chronic asthmatic bronchitis ) as well as genetics/preventative/origins of asthma because the more we know about the triggers , environmental factors and causative agents linked to asthma the more likely we are to find more effective treatments and possibly a cure ! There is far too much ignorance about this dieses even among those of us who have it . Dara , your uncle has not 'outgrown' his asthma - he is in remission or has mild asthma to begin with and is going through an asymptomatic period . Please do t be lulled by this false bit of folk lore -you will NEVER 'outgrow' your asthma - it is a lifelong ,incurable dieses . If those of us who have it take no interest in looking for causes then we certainly delay the scientific communities efforts to find a cure / better treatment options . If the general public were more educated about the known avoidable causes / contributors to asthma and the potential seriousness of this dieses we could spare allot of people from going through the things that we deal with each day. Because I have been very 'visable'on my college campus and open about my illness ( I'm 1 of those with impaired lung function so on good days I sound like I just woke up and on bad ones I can barely get enough air out to produce any sound so its hard not to notice !) I have had lots of people come to me with questions about asthma ; many of them have small children with the illness and the majority of those parents ( I can small em coming from a good 12 feet LOL) smoke - I DO make it a point to explain to them that by choosing to smoke , even outdoors away from their asthmatic child , there are literally thousands of chemical compounds in cigs and it is on their skin , hair and clothing so without intending to they are making their child sicker with every hug !! An asthmatic child whose parents smoke ( been there , done that !) has no knowledge that it's moms hug or dads homecoming that is making him ill .....but asthmatic ADULTS do and we should try to get that information across to caretakers so that those kids have a better chance of avoiding worsening asthma and the complications it can bring . stepping off the soap box, sheepishly hanging head .... Wow , did i just write all that ? teresa
