Guest guest
Greetings : Here is some more information for you. When you go to the second site {and here I have included an excerpt which all should read}, it is called The Six Ss of Managing Chronic Pain see below. http://www.acpa.zip.com.au/ The Chronic Pain Association of Austrailia http://www.public.health.wa.gov.au/hp2252.htm Understanding Chronic Pain -How to Cope Pain - has an Element of Blank - It cannot recollect When it begun - or if there were A time when it was not The Six Ss of Managing Chronic Pain Consider each of the following points carefully in coping with your chronic pain problem. SEIZING control Taking control of your pain problems means first of all accepting that the underlying cause is not curable. As long as you keep looking for a cure, the pain is controlling your life. Taking control means accepting that you will have to live with the pain as best you can. You can then learn to take control over how you want your life to be. SYMPTOM relief Carefully judged use of medication can be very valuable when the pain problem is particularly bad. However, there can be problems associated with long-term drug treatment. Make sure you ask your doctor or pharmacist for all the information you need before you choose which medicine to take: for example the effects of long term use, possible side-effects, whether you should avoid drinking alcohol while taking the medicine. Remember that pain can also be relieved by a variety of common sense remedies such as warmth and rest. SAFETY You first need to protect yourself by avoiding treatments which may be harmful. Over-medication can present real danger to somebody with chronic pain. Any proposal for surgical procedures should be fully discussed with your medical advisers. Secondly, avoid risky situations which could lead to injuries likely to make the pain worse. An enthusiastic hug from a family member or a push from someone in a crowd may be quite disabling. SOCIALISING and working You may be advised to 'take it easy' and rest. While this may help from time to time when pain is bad, if you take the advice too seriously and begin avoiding pain by avoiding all activities, the result can be disastrous. You can easily slip into a life where you are isolated, depressed and have nothing to think about but your pain. This is the 'take it easy' trap. It is important to maintain your social contacts and live as actively as possible. Learning to cope with similar or alternative activities may take a long time, and will require determination and a good deal of support - but it is worth it. For example, some 'ordinary' activities (e.g. housework) may be impossible but a careful search will uncover worthwhile alternatives. SANITY Nearly all people suffering from chronic pain become depressed at some time and many develop other psychological problems such as anxiety. A doctor may then see the anxious/depressed person as having only a 'psychological' problem rather than 'real' pain. Confusion between the 'psychological' symptoms and the 'real' pain may lead to inappropriate management. Keeping in tune with your feelings, staying in touch with your friends and taking part in suitable activities will help you to cope with depression. SUPPORT Support and understanding from family and friends will make a real difference to your ability to cope. Also, you will often find that one of the health professionals you contact will be of particular importance in giving support. Blessings' & Peace D.
