OK, so now I am confused. It has been my impression that one does not need

to be concerned about bacterial growth in a soap? Please explain.

Khadiyja,

The answer will depend on the dwell time for the heat and the temperature.

Real Oatmeal v. Colloidal Oatmeal

Hello everybody,

I called a potential supplier today, expressing an interest in making soaps

(Melt & Pour). So I want to make oatmeal soaps. She suggested that I

buy colloidal oatmeal rather than regular oatmeal, because the bacterial

count is lower. Ok I understand lower v. low. However, if you are making a

soap, when you are including ingredients (even particles of berries, etc.)

wouldn't the heat of the M & P kill any potential for growth of bacteria?

Ok don't laugh, I'm really serious!

Angie,

Not so much bacteria but yeast and molds in soap. I think the earlier

reference should have correctly stated lower microbial count rather than

just bacteria.

For those looking to purchase colloidal oatmeal it is manufactured by Quaker

Oats and sold under the name of Ster-O-Pro. Beacon CMP is an authorized

distributor of this material.
