Guest guest
Tina: Welcome to the list (a/k/a your extended family). Try not to dwell too much on the past and have hope for the future. We live in a suburb of Houston, so, we're not that close to y'all. But, we are only an e-mail away! Peacefully, Jeff Sell Hitt, & Sell www.HittSell.com JZSell@... (office) (cell/v-mail) jzsell@... (home) xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx The information in this email is educational and not intended to be legal advice xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx newbie here well...i am setting here in tears...i just can't quit .... We have been kept in the dark for so many years about all of this.... I have a little girl who is now going to be 8 yrs old in October. We were told , kind of off hand, by a psychiatrist a couple of years ago that she had an autism spectrum disorder.... when I asked if that meant she had autism he said " no " ... there is a whole spectrum and she is just somewhere in between...... Now I'm saying to myself ' what the heck did that mean and why the heck didn't I pursue it until now? " I have told therapists this statement...they shake their heads...I have told doctors....I have told teachers...the new psychiatrist... no one ever said " Hey..dont' you know...that means she has PDD! " and here are the services that you should be getting " !!!! We have been about half way treating some of the manifestations such as the sensory integrative issues and anger and communication barriers and behaviors...but not to the extent that was so obviously needed !! I can't quit crying because I now see all of the services that she should have been getting....I can't quit crying because I see where she has been treated so badly at school because they thought she was just " acting bad " .... I have some real horror stories believe me!.... If she were to have been given the actual diagnosis of PDD-NOS we would have had something to show them as a reason for her behaviors! Now it has been thrown into new light due to me just telling the psych. at our last visit this month that I felt like I was losing her more and more and that she was acting more and more autistic. She looked at me and said " Well Tina...she IS autistic " You could have heard a pin drop....and my jaw drop as well!! Now the school has told me " I've never seen it in her file " ....i noticed they didn't say we never knew she had it!!!! or we never thought she had it...just " it wasn't in her medical file! " Which the psych. told me that it has been in her file for quite some time. The school says they have to have their own formal assessment and that they will implement whatever behavior management techniques are recommended at that time...they have also told me that they will ahve to provide an in-home person to train my husband and I and that they will have to send us for conferences and workshops.... We live in Coryell County (near McLennan and Bell)....is anyone on the list from anywhere near me? I feel like I may have finally found a glimmer of hope as far as she is concerned. I felt like I was losing her.... maybe now we can get her back God Bless you all!!!!!! TIna Yows mom to Brittany and , , and Marcus
Guest guest
It breaks my heart to hear your story Tina. It just makes me realize how lucky we are. I am just dumbfounded that you could have gone on all this time without some professional giving you a proper diagnosis and what to do about it. Man, I had daycare workers telling me my 3 year old was Autistic and I thought THEY were the ones that were crazy! lol Well I know this is no laughing matter... I used to wonder why God would have given a child w/ PDD NOS to someone like me w/ so little patience. What I have realized is that I am so fortunate to have been living in an area where it was recognized as early as 3 1/2 years old that he was PDD NOS and I was able to receive services for him early on. Sometimes we feel disheartened and we feel a little sorry for ourselves (not often ) about why we have the child we have; but I feel lucky most of the time that at least we have had tons of support and unlimited well of services from which to dip from. Tina - I hope this is a new beginning for you and your family. I don't think it's too late! You hang in there and I bet a year from now things will be looking a lot better. Peace!
