Guest guest
Sure is good to hear things are going well for some of you..Todd and Iris. When you really don't feel good and keep trying meds it seems you will never get better. , my husband has checked into ultra-violet lights..we might get them..but have to get the money. Sounds like a nice concept and is suppose to work to kill bacteria. Iris, there is a connection between blood sugar and asthma. I was reading in Dr. Rapp's book on asthma that people that are hypoglycemic (which I was about a year and a half ago) develops asthma. I'm certain that the blood sugar plays some important rolls in all of this. Agent Starling...I only go to GP for a sore throat..for anything else I've learned to get a recommendation from him and see a specialist. a, has your 6 year old been tested for cystic fibrosis? Guest guest
Oh gosh. Now your freaking me out! Cystic fibrosis? What exactly is this? And do you think he has symptoms for this? Guest guest
a, Cystic fibrosis is a chronic illness wherein there is a fundamental problem with transport in epithel (sp?) cells that causes an abnormal increase in the amount and thickness of mucus. As far as the lungs go, people who have cystic fibrosis with lung involvement produce a lot of mucus (or not much depending on stage of illness) that is breeding ground for frequent to constant infections, coughing, and pnuemonia (very simplified explanation). Additionally, most people who have cf have trouble with digesting food because our pancreas don't make enough of certain enzymes so we are prescribed enzymes to help with digestion. Children/adults with cf also tend to dehydrate quickly, tend to be slightly salty to taste, have sinus problems, were born with meconium illeus (this is not true for all). It is hereditary and exists from birth but there can be late diagnosis if the symptoms are noticeable or present at birth. CF is often the differential diagnosis for asthma but exists in the general population in about 1 in 2000 caucasian american children (although it does strike other ethnicities this is the one specific figure I know). Diagnosis is made through either a sweat test where they measure the amount of chloride (this is high in children/adults with cf), a genetic test, nasal potential difference (which is a new test so I know very little about it), or a combination of these. Also, they would usually do throat/sputum/sinus cultures to determine if there is chronic infection, chest xrays, and fecal fat tests (to determine amount of malabsoprtion caused from lack of enzymes). If you read webpages about cystic fibrosis they seem very negative but there is constantly new and better treatment. From the time I was diagnosed to now, there has been a ton of new medicines that help to clear the viscous mucus in my lungs, enzymes have gotten much better, there has been some new forms of antibiotics, etc. As a person with cystic fibrosis, I have been lucky to have done many things including travelling a lot, playing competitive tennis and running cross country. You should consider asking your doctor if your son has symptoms because the sooner he is treated (if he were to have it) the better the outcome and less damage to his lungs, etc. If you have any other questions please do not hesitate to contact me! amy 20 w/cf, cf related diseases, and asthma > >Oh gosh.
