Guest guest
My dr wouldn't give me anything for water retention as he said it wouldn't help as it was not a normal water retention, that it was in the tissues. He told me to ride an exercise bike daily and it has really helped alot. You need to keep the ankles moving. I do about 3-4 miles everyday . some days I just can't do that much as I have alot of problems yet with the mucsles being really sore and tender. But I do what I can. It really had helped alot.Someday they are almost normal again. Deb Deitsch
Guest guest
This would make sense to me as I work on my feet (I am a pet groomer) and the days I work it is better than my days off. Most days the pain is prohibitive from even walking any more than I have to. I never knew how painful swelling in the limbs could be till this started! Will this help the water retention in other parts of the body? I also have it in my face, hands and can gain 14-16 pounds overnight when it is at it's worst. I generally hold this for a few days then it "releases" and I run to the bathroom all day but by night time, the weight & swelling is gone, just leaving the pain. I have no clue what causes it to release when it does, but I can tell within a few hours of awakening when it is happening. Guest guest
, I'm still working on balance and solution for this myself.. I've always had trouble with dehydration and poor thirst reflex...so I would keep track of how much water I drank.. if I wasn't getting a gallon in a day I'd push myself... (based on my experience lifting weights and the rule of thumb that you drink 1 ounce of water per pound of body weight per day I knew that 8 glasses for someone my size was not enough so I picked a gallon as my goal.. even though it was still less than the 'guideline'). Over the last few years, being underdosed or without thyroid meds I started having more and more problems with water retention. I've always read that one reason the body retains water is because it isn't getting enough so it tries to retain it.. so I pushed to drink more water. My feet and ankles were sometime so swollen I could get shoes and socks on... One day I read a bit about being hypo and our bodies metabolic rates being low... that because of this many of the 'standard rules' for food and water no longer apply.... that we need less water because our bodies are using less because of the lower metabolic rate... So.. I'm experimenting now.. over the last four months or so... I no longer force water... I still sip throughout the day.. for dry mouth/throat.. but drink only to slack thirst... I'm having a LOT less trouble with swelling... The same thing with the congestion 'bubbly breathing:' I've had no trouble with that either.... Would love to hear if any others have been facing this and any solutions and what not they've considered or tried.... Guest guest
I have gone through the same thing with fluid retention in my arm, legs, and face. Have tried just about everything but the only thing that has worked is lymphatic massage. It has releived the fluid retention. I can literally see the swelling go down as the lymph drainage takes place. It is a light touch massage and works wonders. Just be sure you go to a therapist that is trained in lymph drainage. I believe they should have at least 120 hours in that field of study. Some massage therapists go to a one or two day workshop and say they are lymph specialists. I would be careful of that. Guest guest
>>if you still have monthly cycles, it could coincide with that. << Nope! Been spayed for 21 years.. BTW I am 48 soon to be 49, I don't mind telling! LOL I have had this fluid retention about 6 years now and been to about 6 docs for it that have not managed to really do anything for it. The best I have felt since then is right now as I have increased my thyroid by 1/2 tab (90 MG) which I now take in the afternoons, along with the 180 MG Armour I take in the AM. Since adding this additional 90 MG my blood pressure has gone back to low from being in stroke range a year ago, and my weight has stabilized but still not able to lose any. I am 5'2" and now weighing 205-220 depending on fluid. I am not a big water drinker.. maybe that is part of my problem. I have been allergic to chlorine my entire life so I never really got used to drinking water as when I was a child, no one bought bottled water except maybe the rich which we weren't. I drink alot of fat free organic milk, V-8 and some fruit juices, but not many. I am also a coffee drinker, but not that much either anymore. No soda. I think the low thyroid caused this and as it took several years to do the damage, will probably take as long to undo it. If it ever goes to normal again. It has often amazed me how little the average Doc knows about how the thyroid works, and how much of our general health depends on it. Guest guest
.... I was never much of a water drinker either.. then I was visiting a friend one day and tried a glass of water from his Brita filter pitcher... Lets just say I bought one on the way home and even take it with me on vacation... See if you can find someone that has one.. It filters water well enough to pull out all the chemical tastes from city water and all the salt and stuff from well water that has been run through a water softener... Maybe it will take care of it for you to? Topper ()http://groups.yahoo.com/group/The_Thyroid_Support_Group/http://toppertwo.tripod.com On Sat, 17 May 2003 18:53:49 -0400 " T" writes: Nope! Guest guest
I had one of those pitchers but when I moved it got lost in the shuffle, but I will look for another one. Not that I will drink more water, part of that is the water is too cold when refrigerated. I also have very bad teeth. Yup, falling apart and not even 50 yet! LOL What I did use it for is (crazy I know) my cats! I have one that gets mouth sores from tap water, but they never happen as long as I keep him on filtered or bottled water. Tells ya how bad our tap water has become! Guest guest
, I dont' refrigerate mine... the pitcher sits here in the office on the corner of the desk.. I have a 2 liter pop bottle that I've cleaned out to fill with tap water... I fill my drinking mug from the pitcher and then top off the pitcher with water from the bottle.. and fill up the bottle when I'm in the kitchen... That way the pitcher is always full which makes the filter last a LOT longer and I have water at hand at all times... I've been doing this for about 4 years now... works great for me and was the ONE BEST THINGS I ever did to get me off of drinking pop all the time... Guest guest
I drink one gallon of bottled spring or distilled water per day. That doesn't count any other liquids. I'm 51 yrs old, and I learned the hard way back in my 20's, from a bout with the lining of my colon. I was barely 20 yrs old, and you know how kids are. I was consuming a 6pk a day of those little bottles of coke, and it never occurred to me in my whole life to drink some water in a day! I went to the doc with my stomach hurting day and night and couldn't figure out what it was. The doc got mad at me and told me that you couldn't live without water. I studied this at that time, and found out that the less water you drink in a day, the more your body will try to hold on to what it's got. The more you drink, the better your body flushes out fluid from "intracellular" components. Unless there is a kidney problem, more water should be consumed than most of us do. If you drink caffeine, drink that much more in water because it's a dieuretic. Guest guest
>>You have a problem with your muscles being really sore? What is it?<< I wish I knew what it is! I only know I hurt almost all the time. I have a very physical job as a pet groomer, but I have done that all my life and am used to the work. Sometimes in the morning my legs are so stiff I can barely walk. My arms & back hurt as well. Lately I have abdominal muscle cramps every time I bend or stretch or strain in the least. These cramps I have been to 4 Dr's for with them each testing the same things. I come up in normal ranges on potassium but my sodium levels are a little low. Guess I took it too much to heart when I was told to cut my salt intake, but how do you try to control water retention without really cutting salt intake? Guest guest
No neurologist, I have no insurance and just started with a "Health Benefit Plan" which I am not sure yet how good it is. I can't afford a neurologist. I have been going to GP's here but I am going to be looking for a new one IF my diabetes testing comes back neg. I will probably go for that Wednesday as I have some money to pay the hospital. I really think this is my biggest problem.. I never have the money to have the testing done that I need. Very frustrating!
