Guest guest
I'm not sure who owns the peach trees ( i get confuzzed sometimes) but I was just wondering if you guys pruned your trees as well. I spent some time at the Niagara parks School of horticulture in Niagara Falls Ontario many years ago and they wanted us to count buds and then cut off the branch. I think that was highly impractical if we want to go out an earn a living. I basically leave about 4 in. of last years growth on and the rest gets recycled or composted. If you have full grown trees you might want to take the crown of the tree out if you haven't already. This will facilitate the picking of fruit during harvest season. Guest guest
That was me, Carl...I will forward this information to my husband, the pruner. When you attended the school did they tell you that peach trees only bear for so many years...and then you have to replant? Guest guest
Thank , I just rememered a joke about that. A motorist was driving down a roadway and noticed two municipal workers at the side of the road on an embankment. One was digging holes and the other was filling them in. The motorist couldn't stand this any longer(his tax dollars you know) so he stopped to find out what was happeining. He proceeded to ask what they were doing. The lead hand said they where planting trees. Agast at his answer the motorist replied that he didn't see any trees anywhere. The lead hand said " Oh the guy that plants the trees took the day off. " Hope this makes someones day. Guest guest
W - You are living well yourself!! I lived in the city all my life until 3 years ago...I know what you mean about boarding your horse...I've done that before...when someone else fed them, etc. It is SO different when your horses are right outside your yard and you feed them yourself. I thought I knew so much about horses, but living so close to them, I have learned even more. They keep such a keen eye on me...my comings and goings. They talk to me in subtle ways...it's really amazing and hard to explain. Sometimes my husband and I go out around midnight and find them in the field and just hang out with them...they circle us and we are one of the herd then...they just stand close to us relaxed...it is such a wonderful experience. Wish I had the raccoons you have, but it's a little dry here...they like creeks, ditches, water and tree places. But I'm glad we don't have possums...they carry a disease that cripples horses...and they get it just from drinking water wherever a possum drank. Your life sounds ideal...it does get a little slow out in the country! You have the best of both worlds! Acreage and city life. What kind of horses do you have and what kind of riding do you do?? Bethlabtrek1941 wrote: Beth, You are living my dream life! We have horses, but, alas, they are boarded, as I live in town. No one can do for them to suit me, but these folks come close. Also have 4 cats and 3 Labrador retrievers, and feed an assortment of raccoons and possums each night. I am a retired RN but do some inpatient hospice work on an as needed basis. We have about an acre, with many live oaks so too much shade for much gardening, but do manage to raise tomatoes, peppers and an asortment of herbs. Went looking for pine straw for bedding plants.yesterday, and found ripe wild blueberries. Yum!! Guest guest
Carl, I would never read an economics book! I HATE money....!!!! Hate the Stock Market..etc, etc, etc.!!!!!!! I don't like the idea of "ownership" - wish people could just live more simply...I kinda hate the way the world works...and wonder all the time why I'm in it? I hate materialism, greed, and luxury. I think that's one reason people get fat...they don't like the rat race either...or the box houses in neighborhoods where people don't meet their neighbors...Teaching school was so purposeful...not sure about my purpose now. I'm still searching for the truth. I read poetry...I read most of the best sellers out there...LOVED "The Secret Life of Bees"...but I also try to read at least one classic a year. I have many favorite authors, but I absolutely love everything Tolstoy has written...especially Karinana. I also love Ayn Rand, and you probably like her too...The Fountainhead is one of my favorites...but I also liked Atlas Shrugged. She is an extrordinary writer - and to think English is her second language just shows how talented she is. Also, One Hundred Years of Solitude by Marquez is a favorite. I also love Wally Lamb's "She's Come Undone" and "I Know this Much is True." is another favoraite author - I've real all her books...you might have heard of "Wall to Wall" but I think her best is "A Mother's Love." I guess you can see by my choices that I love tragedies, human struggle...etc. I identify with them. And to answer your question about stress - my physical life is not stressful...however, I am from a dysfunctional family and I always have to deal with them. I am also writing a book right now too.... BethCARL FRENCH wrote: Dear Beth, just an afterthought. Did you ever read a book by Zane Pilzer who is an economist who wrote a book called The Next Trillion which is about the changes in the way our economy and our healthcare system is changing. A big part of the changes are technology based. We are also living longer due to the health and wellness improvements. Your lifestyle sounds very healthy and I detect no sense of stress, which is a big influence in our lives. Guest guest
Beth!!! adopt me!! I wanna live with you and your horses!!!Beth Lackey escribió: W - You are living well yourself!! Also have 4 cats and 3 Labrador retrievers, and feed an assortment of raccoons and possums each night. I am a retired RN but do some inpatient hospice work on an as needed basis. We have about an acre, with many live oaks so too much shade for much gardening, but do manage to raise tomatoes, peppers and an asortment of herbs. Went looking for pine straw for bedding plants.yesterday, and found ripe wild blueberries. Yum!! Guest guest
Beth and Carl, You two have reminded me of a time when our congregation was building a new place of worship (which we built ourselves). A man came to help who had supervised many such projects. He said it was his observation that if he told the brothers in the congregation to dig a ditch, they would all go to the phones to call about renting heavy equipment. The sisters, on the other hand, would grab shovels, pails, spoons, or whathaveyou and start digging. lol Mona --- CARL FRENCH wrote: > Beth, for once in my life I think I have met my > match.
