Guest guest
Good job at standing up to the doc's about the pain meds. Tylenol can further damage the liver especially in cirrhosis patients. My wifes doctor advised her to stay away from Tylenol products. Get some well deserved rest. Depending on the treatment your husband could be in the hospital 3 - 5 days. I hope everything goes comfortably for him and that he can be pain free. My heart and prayers go out to you. MaC NC Mom wrote: Hi all! As I said last night (or was it earlier today?) my husband had an appt with a new doc. About an hour before the appt he decided he wanted to go on to the ER instead, since that is probably where the doc would send him. He was in tremendous pain. I cancelled the appt and took him in. We had a VERY LONG drawn out ER visit, but long story short: he got admitted. They tried three times & could not get an IV in him. Poor guy, he was crying the IVs were so painful. They have decided that tomorrow he will get a PIC line. His veins are shot. I will have to tell you the junk the first ER doc put us through with pain meds later on, but suffice it to say, he suggested Tylenol if my husband was in serious pain. I was SO mad. I told him that would not cut it, so he offered Advil. I wanted to scream and was about to leave. But long story short, the admitting doc (different one) took a totally different angle and agreed that Palliative care is important if that is what he wants. So he ordered Morphine for him, IM (hip). That is until the PIC line is in, then he will get it that way. He will probably being have a paracentesis tomorrow, 4-5 liters, more than that will cause him problems the doc said. He is up over 10 pounds in the last week, and I KNOW it is not from eating. If I remember correctly, his INR & Bilirubin were both 1.2. His magnesium is low, platelets were okay, his ammonia levels were high, but not too high. Normal is 32 and his was 56. I did not find out about Creatinine. Will try to find out tomorrow more information. I am ready to drop, so I will go. I desperately wanted to text you while at the hospital, but did not have your email addy with me. Then I called my kids at home to get them to look it up but the Internet was down,m so they could not look it up. I will update more probably tomorrow evening. Congratulations again Bobby! I am SO happy for you both! in WNC --------------------------------- Be a better friend, newshound, and know-it-all with Yahoo! Mobile. Try it now. Guest guest
Thank you for the well wishes. Needless we are ecstatic. MaC to answer your question, it is Jan4, 2007. It will be a nice chunk of cheese as you say. , I am always afraid that people I care about here are going to run into the anti opioid bias. I ran into it too. I was seen in the ER 8 times in 2007, and not once did they offer me anything for pain. After I started going in there with my own prescription, boy did that get their goose. I even got chewed out by the " fellow " at the hepatology program for being on them, as if they are evil or something. There is no safer more effective way to control pain. Some people dont tolerate opioids well, but that is because they are what is known as " opioid naive " . In these type of patients, there can be some problems with respiratory depression, but I have learned a whole lot from not only my pain doc as well as Sharon's chiari friends almost all of whom have been on STRONG opioids for many years. Sharon has been on them for 6 years. She is not an addict. She is dependent on them, much the same as a diabetic will become dependent on insulin. Everyone of us have opioids in our bodies, and these drugs bind to them and help block pain receptors. I will pray extra hard that they will not let your dear husband suffer. That is precisely what the first doctor was suggesting. Lets give him a hepatoxic weak analgesic. I asked my hepatologist before I sought treatment from a pain specialist, and he assured me that they were non toxic to all of the organs and body tissues, and he recommended I go on a long acting opioid. I did just that, and can say that with out these drugs I would have hit the bar long ago. Sharon even told me that if no one would treat my pain, that she would not hold it against me if I had to drink to make the pain go away. These drugs are much better at reducing the pain than alcohol, which is more like a anesthetic than a analgesic. Good luck, . I am so glad you joined our group!
