Hi everyone,

I would like to know why taking elevil and prozac are not a good

combination. That is what i am taking. I read in one post that they are

not good together why not? Debbie

Dear Debbie,

I was taking that also. Prozac in the morning and Elival at night. It

seems to me a lot of Doctors prescribe that for FMS suffers. Do you have

FMS? And if it is not a good Idea I would like to know why also.

Hi, I am reasonably new to this area, have been reading them all and thought I

would throw my 2 cents in tonight. I, too, have FMS/CFS and I have a recent

injury to my back which needless to say has left me in pain for a while to

varying degrees. One of the things that my doctor is trying me on is the

Nortriptyline, I have recently just been moved up to 200mg. a night, they can

check your blood levels to see if you are absorbing it right so they can

adjust your dosage. One thing that it does, (with much less side effects) is

to help you get rest at night when you lay down to sleep, secondly it is known

to help with nerve pain during the day so that you may not have to take so

many opiates, etc. I was on the MS contin for a brief period, but it gave me

anxiety attacks! So I don't take that anymore! I have been through the

thinking about changing docs, I belong to an HMO that would allow this

anytime, but I gave him more chances and in this last year he has learned to

respect the fact that I, alone, know my body best and what it is or isn't

doing, so we go over any changes to my treatment pretty carefully. One thing

my HMO offers, which was a godsend, is a chronic pain management class. It

lasted 5 weeks and was worth every single second! I missed two classes

because of migraines, but they helped me with homework. Check and see, anyone

with chronic pain of any sort, if this is available to you and best wishes to

all. I appreciate the varied information and opinions, I read as much as

possible about chronic pain and the management of it, there are many ways to

I'm not a doctor or pharmacist, I'm just a patient, so be sure to talk to

your doctor, pharm or other medical professional... (disclaimer done)

Elavil and Prozac are both antidepressants that affect the serotonin in the

brain, but they function quite differently. If they are mixed, the

possibility may exist that they can have serious consequences, possibly

even including death. I was taking Paxil and my doctor prescribed elavil

for me, and I rememered hearing about this, so when I talked to the

pharmacist, I asked about it. The first one I talked to said his computer

didn't show any problems, so I checked a drug interaction program I had and

it said not to use them together at ALL. I called a different pharmacy (I

was trying to find a place to get my prescriptions filled and I wanted to

be really clear on this part). This second pharmacy said that they WOULD

NOT fill the order together UNLESS the spoke to the doctor themselves and

he authorized it. I asked them to call the doctor and when they called me

back a bit later, they said that the doctor had apparently not been aware

of the potential problem and had withdrawn the elavil prescription. Paxil

and Prozac aren't the same thing, but they do work similarly.

I'd suggest talking to your doctor or pharm further -- it very well may be

that in certain dosages the two are OK to use together, and your doctor may

have prescribed them that way... I don't know...
