Thanks for sharing this Shari.

I understand that reflux can be bad in early years, resolve, and then return in

the teen years. Maybe you'll be able to back off for awhile.

The doctor seemed to think that our son was eating to soothe pain - its a

vicious cycle: eat to nuetralize the gerd, and then being overweight,

contributes to the gerd.

I think I'm starting to really understand this better.

Our daughter was scoped last year. She was refluxing in her sleep during the

endoscopy. She's been taking Aciphex for over a year. The Aciphex works well -

but, I've heard that it can interfere with nutrient absorption with ASD kids. We

took our daughter to the dentist to see if the acid hurt her teeth. She's fine.

I've tried backing her off - actually we are half dosage now. We tried stopping

altogether and she complained again about her tummy. She just holds her throat

and says her neck hurts when she's having acid reflux.

That's interesting about eating to soothe the pain. We couldn't get our daughter

to eat anything. She's gained 13 pounds since last year - after starting

Aciphex. I guess everything made her stomach feel too full and she didn't want

the burning sensation in her throat. We were finally glad to see some meat on

her. Although, there are times now that she seems to eat to soothe a stomach

pain. I wonder if it could be an ulcer. The gastroenterologist said it probably

isn't - but at times - something isn't right about her eating. I noticed that

when I increase her calcium during these spells that she seems somewhat

relieved. And, constipation can be a terrible aggravator of reflux. So, we try

to keep that under control. Hard to do most of the time.

Your daughter sounds like what one typically sees in the sound bytes: GER and

weightloss...so I was surprised when the GI doc took us through the cycle, when

we discussed some of the patterns for Ben.

He said using buffered C would be good too.
